Dr. Olree is so knowledgable and absolutely incredible to listen to. His lectures are informative and well presented and his projects could not be more helpful when it comes to learning the material. A member of the church with his J.D. from the University of Chicago, what more could one ask of a political science prof? He must be one of the most intelligent men on the entire Harding campus. Since I couldn't possibly say enough good things about him I will end by recomending him to anyone with a remote interest in law.

An inspiration to us all

It is very tempting to refer to this man as my favorite Harding professor. I have never looked forward to a class the way I anticipate History of the South. In every class period I find myself laughing and crying as I relate to the characters in his stories, totally wrapped up in every word he says. Dr. Klein is truely a skilled teacher and a great man.

a great man

Though I am a history minor I have only had the pleasure of taking Dr. Jewell once. In my experience he is a wonderful man with a genuine love for his students. He is very knowledgable and will never forget you.

Good man, not as good a teacher

Although Dr. Jewell is a wonderful man, his classroom presence leaves something to be desired. He is knowledgeable in all of his areas of study and helpful for projects or anything you may need from him outside of class. Dr. Jewell does have good voice inflection, but how he communicates the subject matter is the big problem. Even in his small upper level classes, he does not maintain the students' interest, nor does he seem to relate anything to student experiences that would pique student interest.
The criticism of this good hearted man's teaching pains me as he is one of the more compassionate and understanding men in this world.

A true scholar and gentleman

Dr. Klein is one of the best lecture-based teachers you will find. In all of his upper level courses you will have two specific book reviews, a major twelve page paper and essay-style tests with identifies and one major essay.
Any lecture the Florida native gives is fascinating insight into the subject matter. Many notes will need to be taken to keep up with his pace and testing style.
The good Doctor is an excellent family man, and he genuinely cares about his students and their understanding of history and how it affects them today.
Anyone, in any field could take his classes and appreciate the subject because of his teaching style and charisma.

A great surprise

I avoided taking "Over head" Fred for the first 3 and 1/2 years I was at Harding because I had heard that he was boring. I can't speak about how he is in surveys, but in small upper-level classes, he's great. He's not a push over, but tests and assignments are fair, and his classroom manner is outstanding. Take him.

He's good, but don't suck up to him

Okay, so Elrod is a great teacher, and I really enjoyed his class, but do you really think it will help your grade to suck up to him on this obscure website? The only reason he's on here (and he's the only professor on here from Harding) is because you got to this page through a link from his homepage. Wonderful, you know how to use a computer, good for you. Do you honestly think anyone would come to this site wondering about a teacher, when they could ask any number of their friends what kind of a teacher he is? So, I guess, if you don't have any friends, look here, but if you do have friends, then you must be writing reviews in order to suck up to him, or bash him because you were too lazy and undisciplined to actually do some work. I especially appreciate one students use of the word "synthesis." By using this word, everyone know you are a nerd (or trying REALLY hard to suck up), and dicounts your opinion. If you really think you "know" Dr. Elrod, you would know that sucking up really wouldn't help you out at all. He's not dumb. My last clue that you are sucking up is that you would leave your name with what you said. That way he can know who it is that said such nice things about him while sucking up. Brilliant. I hope you got the grade you wanted, but did you really learn anything? I'll bet not. Here's to the overacheiving A and B students of the world who can't think for themselves, other than how to make the grade they want. Good luck in life, I hope your bosses like suck ups.

Best teacher I have ever had

I think he is one of the best teachers that I have ever had. He challenges us to think on our own and grades us very fairly. There is a lot of reading to do and you have to be able to analyze and synthesize material but it is a wonderful class and you really get to dig into classic political literature. Do not take him if you aren't willing to work.

OK, I guess

The most memorable thing about this class was that it was after lunch so I was high half of the time. His class is hard, but not impossible if you're willing to learn and willing to listen. I'm uncertain of the course number for this class, but I learned so much about how the US (past and present) relates on the international scale. I had three classes with him, International Relations, International Law, and Comparative Politics, and every single class, while being difficult, taught me something. In International Law we saw the documentary Mr. Death--it didn't exactly relate, but it was a hilarious film. Dr. Elrod's stories are always the best--half of our class time was spent listening to his stories and talking about current events or Harding life. These were some of my best classes here.

Challenge yourself and take his class.

I don't know who the National Merit Scholar was that reviewed Elrod at a D, but it's obvious he has no idea what he's talking about. The reviewer used the wrong form of the word "there," and is clearly a disgruntled future associate night manager of a gas station who flunked out of Elrod's challenging class because he has little to no intelligence or work ethic. Elrod is great. He's informative, witty, and helpful. Good luck finding as good a teacher at Harding, much less anywhere else.

OK... if their are no other options

I guess this guys ok but I reely could'nt get into the class. Harding is an expensive school, but I dont see why we have to do so much reding for a GEN-ED class! (i think it was like 100 pages from the text book). His lecture style is ok but his exams are too hard (multiple choyce and T/F). THeir are easier teachers at HU -- take one of them for this class if you have too. One good thing -- Elrod does'nt take points off for absenses, so I skipped like 12 classes.

One of Harding's BEST!

Dr. Elrod (PhD., Vanderbilt University) is one of the most outstanding members of the Harding faculty. His classes are usually the first closed classes on the schedule, despite the fact that he is a rigorous instructor. His lecture style utilizes both interaction with his students and some of the best powerpoint presentations I have ever seen. He is open, friendly, and fair in his assessments. Take him for this class -- he knows his stuff!
