Kent Jennings is just such a professor. I have attended several institutions of higher learning over several years and he is easily the worst professor I ever had. Kent Jennings simply lacks the people skills to create a productive and beneficial learning environment. He uses entire class periods to make one or two childishly simple points. Kent Jennings is a statistician who should be in an office far removed from any interpersonal environment in which he can cause damage. Kent Jennings plays favorites and fosters heated political dialogue in which he punishes those with viewpoints he doesnt agree with. He ignores students simply on account of their viewpoints being inconsistent with his racist and extremist views. He encourages class participation, but not sharing his opinions means not being called on. How can someone with such contempt for students be teaching? Kent Jennings created such acrimony among students that an informal support group formed among class members. On evaluation day, some students said pay-back and scrambled to bubble in all the 1s on their evaluation scantrons. While the Professor (Gerson) and GSIs are friendly enough, it is purposely taught in a way to keep non-specializing students from having a chance to do well.  Material is covered very rapidly and with little explanation.  Instructors begin using the arcane language of economics right away, explaining what each unusual term means perhaps once.

This is not an uncommon practice in the University of Michigan bureaucracy. Arlene Saxonhouse, nevertheless, does it so flagrantly that working on anything except her personal things is no longer an option for her. Arlene Saxonhouse arrives to class hurried, unfocused, and unprepared to deliver a good lecture. When class ends, she leaves the classroom quickly and darts back to her office. She has no time for students outside class. She devotes her time to her sexual harassment awareness groups, womens empowerment issues, and other forms of activism. Arlene Saxonhouse is so hands off that her teaching assistants do not perform their job adequately. Her teaching assistants don't grade fairly and receive little input from her about how tests should be graded. Arlene Saxonhouse can't be bothered with student concerns and has a dismissive response style when speaking to them. She makes it known that students grades may suffer for speaking to her. She is mostly absent during her office hours and meets with students only if they insist on seeing her. When teaching, he uses good analogies to illustrate his subject matter, his lectures are generally coherent, but he is against students participating in class.  His subject matter is difficult to understand and he makes it known that asking questions garners his disapproval.  He engages in the same kinds of behavior outside class.  He speaks with students who initiate conversation, but one can sense his reluctance and he is generally condescending.

Students describe his behavior as "odd" and "disconcerting."  He is self-absorbed and carries himself with a uniform noble quality coupled with sardonic disdain. When asked some questions about the time and location of the exam, he blew me off rudely saying that &amp;quot;it was on the website&amp;quot;, rather than telling me on the spot.  I would not have asked him if it were on the website.
As for teaching, he doesn't dumb down the material, but at the same time, he doesn't explain it in a logical flow so that anyone can understand.  EECS100 is really very simple material -- there is no reason that any students should have difficulty understanding it.
For instance, logical 1's and 0's should be explained starting with the on-off point, followed by +5V/0V,then to 1's and 0's, then to gate logic.  Not gate logic, 1's and 0's, and then coming back to it several weeks later after everyone has lost interest. 
Students stay interested in material if it is readily graspable.  If it is made not to be, then no matter how easy, people lose interest.

Knows a great deal about reference sources. Unfortunately, much of it is grossly out-of-date. Spends more time telling random irrelevant anecdotes and presenting spurious statistics than actually teaching the sources. Insulting to foreign students; occasionally borders on harassment with female students. Has absolutely no control over his classes.
