I think that his expectations for the class are extremely unrealistic and absurd. I understand that studying for this class is a necessity, but 3+ hours a night?! I have two jobs currently and have trouble "studying" enough for the tests and even some of the quizes. I don't have the time to be studying for one class that much unless I think it would be more important to pass this class than make rent or eat every month. My combined score on the first two tests was a 63...an average of 31.5! Apparently studying for 9 hours before a test(on top of the 4 hours I'm able to get in during the rest of the week)wasn't enough. Thanks to Mark Cracolice and CHEM 161, I've given up on my dream of going to medical school and becoming a doctor, since my GPA obviously will reflect a failed chemistry class.

Good teacher - but not suprisingly unmarried

Yes, good ol' crac is a hardass. but if you get your sigfigs right and actually get your ass on a chair and learn for this class every day - it ain't that bad. The one that really gives me trouble is a TA called kittichai chaiseeda. you can't understand what he says cause he speaks very poor english and his grading is absolutely random. if you go into chem-lab - avoid HIM

Frustration in Chem 161/162

The first day of lecture in Chem 161, my immediate judgment of Mr. Cracolice was 'good gods, what a narcistic jerk,' and my second thought was, 'just give him a chance, it's the first day.' I'm sorry to see that near the end of Chem 162, my first opinion has been far too accurate. I have had challenging classes, I took biology classes at the University of Montana while still in high school because the high school curriculum was not challenging, but I have never struggled in any endeavor like I have in Mr. Cracolice's college chemistry class. Mr. Cracolice is cold, unapproachable, and I can count the times he's smiled on one hand in a year of class with him, but all that notwithstanding, I feel it's his teaching methods that I cannot ascribe to. His lectures are ok; they're understandable and cover the material well. The laboratory sections and workshops are great, fun even, but his exams are horrid. His advice to 'do the homework, review the material, and the test should be fine' is a joke. I've done the homework, reviewed the material for endless hours, and still cannot succeed on his bloody exams, which is unfortunate considering they make up a greater portion of the overall grade and are preventing me achieving a higher grade in the class. His joint venture with the Psychology department undertaking the HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) project has turned me and my classmates into guinea pigs for him to test his newly developed method of teaching, which would be fine if it wasn't for the inferior texts and materials and the distracted and disjointed environment that constitutes the class. I'm currently in the position of having to take this course again which I do not appreciate and I find that I am unable to escape his ludicrous teaching methods for he has a veritable monopoly on the College Chemistry curriculum at the University of Montana. My only relief comes from the fact that I am to transfer away from the U of M within the next 18 months.

Get a life!

Those of you who think this class is difficult should not even think about going to medical or pharmacy school...you have not seen anything yet. You give him and the class a poor grade because he forces you to learn..something very foreign to most of you. While he is lacking in social skills on the personal level, he is actually a very capable professor. His class is set up to force you to learn the subject if you plan to pass, and his exams, while difficult, are nessecary.

Exceptional Teacher

One of the best teachers from whom I have ever taken a class. He is unapproachable to students, and his grading techniques are severe. It is the Teachers Assistants that make this class workable. They are the saving grace of Chemistry 161. Complaints have been registered by numerous students against him and the class, but nothing has been done. I do not recommend this class, and if a student can get around it, he should avoid taking this class if taught by this teacher, and any other class taught by him.

Stay away from this instructor!

Perhaps this professors only saving grace was his homework guide, which actually provided assistance in learning the material. Mr. Cracolice however, is one of the most unapproachable professors I have ever encountered. Don’t even try to get a hold of him, unless you are a “pet” student. Exams in this class are unrealistic, frequently not representative of material taught, and also graded very subjectively from exam to exam for the same answers!
