He's not a pushover and you won't get a really high grade (unless you really, really put in the effort) but you definitely learn the material.

Worst teacher at Cal Poly

John Dalbey is one of the rare individuals who somehow became a computer science professor without developing any programming knowledge. This fact is well masked, however, by his incredible ego and horrific attitude.

The department has relegated him to the lowest spot a tenured professor can go: the CSC101 class and a 300 level "Computers and Society" class.

Without mentioning what professor Dalbey did to me personally, I will say this: In an "introductory" computer science class, one which the department average was about 2/3 passing, he failed 3/4 of the students. The students, as a whole, went to the department and protested, and (amazingly) had all of the F's changed to C's. The deparment mentioned that they never would have conceeded to this if professor Dalbey had not had so many complaints against him already.

In case you are wondering, there is a LOT of dogmatic homework in his classes, to the tune of 12 hours a week (at least for me).

Hope lives on though, because during most terms, any class Dalbey teaches is also taught by a competent professor.

Hard but fair

He makes you work, but you learn more than you would with any other math teacher. He is willing to help anyone who is willing to learn. i would also reccomend him for upper division math courses.

Stay Away!

I suppose Merrill is a competent designer, and had something to give as a lecturer. However, he spent most of the class review time with the prima donna designer types, giving little to other students. He is somewhat of a sadist, and likes to give D's. In one class of 18, he gave 6 of them. Doesn't this reflect more on the teacher than the student? He usually states that he is having problems with his personal life as an excuse for unavailability. Maybe he wouldn't have so many problems if he wasn't such an asshole.
