Lectures were rather boring and it seemed that a lot of time was wasted in doing algebra on the board (which she sometimes did wrong). She was very willing to help during her office hours, though she kind of made me feel like a moron after asking what I thought was a ligitimate question. She was probably just trying to make sure I completely understood her answer, though. Her exams were pretty difficult but fair, but the quizzes were much easier than anything we ever saw on an exam, which, I felt, didn't really prepare us for the exams. We did have to turn in homework for the class for a completion grade. Overall she was just okay: not amazing, not terrible.

I had a 95% on quizzes and labs and still failed

She may be an alien, she was so completely out of touch with the learning process of "humans" that I have no other explanation. I really liked Katja, and she thought she was a really nice person. She does assign a lot of reading, and she does expect a lot of info to be presented on the tests. However, she gave very thorough study guides and always gave a lot of feedback on tests and papers. I thought her grading was very fair. She is not the most energetic lecturer, but she is clear and easy to follow and she did use movies and media like cartoons and maps to help illustrate her points. Her readings, with one exception, were usually very interesting, and she made an effort to include different types of materials- ie short stories by dissidents, poetry, in addition to history texts. I found her very available outside of class, as well as very friendly and approachable. I would encourage anyone who serious about history to take her courses. If you are looking for an easy A, or don't really like history, you will probably be frustrated in her classes. She really teaches to serious history students who really want to engage the material.

Take her classes!

Lynn Hegarty is an amazing professor and person. She has a ton of energy that she brings to class, and she really cares about her students. She is very compassionate about special/ extenuating circumstances, and tries to be available and approachable. She seems to love her job. She is an easy to fair grader. Our tests were take home essays, and she gave ample time to complete them, and had flexible topics and guidelines. I would highly reccomend her classes both to serious history students and to people who typically avoid history classes. She is fun, yet professional, knowledgeable and very gernerous with her time for her students.

Excellent instructor!

Excellent grasp of the subject matter. However, in his 48 minutes lectures about half of that time, if not more, is spent with him senselessly trailing off with stories that often have no relevance to the subject material at all. This teacher seems more intent to appease the students that teach them. Course study guides were added late and were very lacking, powerpoint slides were next to useless as they often has little to no information on them besides pictures.

Terrible. Just terrible.

Prof. Liu is the worst teacher I have ever had. Ever. He is very difficult to understand in lecture because his accent is heavy, he mumbles, and he speaks looking at his shoes. His tests were totally random. They covered material that we hadn't gone over in class and hadn't been assigned to read. He would just pull statements from chapters in the book and expect you to know whether they were true or false. This class was so frustrating. There was no good way to prepare for a test because he might test you over anything, whether or not it had ever been mentioned. On the final, you had to recreate a diagram from a section in the book that hadn't been covered. Taking notes is a pain. He doesn't use overheads except for transparencies of diagrams from the book. Bring some caffeine with you so you can stay awake, IF there's no way you can avoid taking a class from him. Oh - and don't let me forget to mention office hours. I never tried to go, but a friend did, and he wouldn't let them in the door unless they had a "good" question. And our grader lived in Indianapolis. The homework didn't apply to the lecture and was too long.

A waste of time and boring

Gurari is one of the most boring teachers I have had. Here are the reasons why:

1. I think his lectures sucked. Always off track, and left me wondering what the crap I was supposed to get out of this.

2. He postponed the date/time for one exam 3 weeks...right before the final on a DAY TO DAY basis. Normally postponing a test is such a big deal, but 3 weeks, and right before finals really screwed me up.

3. I walked into his office DURING office hours, and was asking him questions. He was very distracted, so I asked him if this wasn't a good time for him...wasn't this his office hour? "Yes, but I didn't think anyone would come." The bottom line was that he was busy working on his research proposal. What really pissed me off is that the entire time I was talking to him HE DIDN'T ONCE LOOK UP FROM HIS STUPID COMPUTER.

Great teacher and engineer

Great guy. He is solely focused on his research and cares little for undergraduates or teaching. His English is marginal at best. His slides and lecture materials were riddled with errors and confusing. He was only interested in plastic injection modeling and gave the impression that all other branches of engineering and science were at best trivial in comparison. However, her mismanagement of the course if pretty egregious. The lab manual is absolutely ridden with errors and the lab assignments (which she wrote) do not correct these errors so they are pretty hard and overly time-consuming to complete. I only got through them because I had a close friend really good at computer science. The exams are more fair, but that is because our TA would help us out before them. I have heard she is a very disagreeable person to approach from both my fellow students and the TA in our class who said she does not feel a need to fix the errors.
