He out shines other professors because he imparts a hunger to learn to his students.

His lectures are never boring. His personality is wonderful, and his speaking skills are first rate.

Unlike other professor, Dr. Erler is always available for his students. Regardless of the situation he has always had time to discuss any questions that I have had.

It is to these facts that give Dr. Erler the high marks that he so greatly deserves.

Erler was a key player in my decision to eventually continue my Poli. Sci education even further.

When I graduated from CSUSB, I walked away with an understanding and deep apreciation for this country and the way in which it came about. The sad part is, my appreciation far exceeds my understanding at this point because there is so much to know. Dr. Erler made this very clear. If there is any reason he pushes students away it must be the fact that he is a man who I beleive has acheived this understading that I still hunger for, and will someday acheive. This guy is not a Political Science teacher, he must be THE PSci. teacher. The amount of material that he has read could probably fill my whole bookshelf several times over. So yes, this may be the one intimidating fact about the professor. He was, however, never belittling or rude to students. He only wants what all people who care for our republican system want. This is for young people to understand and appreciate America and the way in which it was formed. Once this is achieved, and only then, can people be productive citizens who love their country. After all, without productive citizens, our wonderful country surely will not last. I, however, would not want the professor to be any other way. This immense knowledge of "the political" as a whole makes for absolutely amazing discussions and lectures that I found myself not wanting to end. The anonymous writer who gave Dr. Erler a D amazes me. My emails were always promptly answered by Erler. I always knew his phone number. Furthermore, anytime I chatted with him he never acted as if I were wasting his time. One only knows as much as he wants to know.
As far as the classes went, they were not difficult if one read the material. I had Dr. Erler I believe two times and received a B and a B-. These grades were certainly not less than fair and I would have recieved A's if I simply gave the courses the effort they were due. I do not remeber getting study guides. Then again, the Founders of this country were not handed out study guides. Any guidelines they had when forming our system came only from hard work, research, and blood. Erler continually made cutting remarks as the negative student has said. They were made only to keep students on their feet, however. I would react the same way when people taking Political Science classes do not know the significance of 7-4-76.
Dr. Erler is an awesome guy who wants nothing but for this great coutnry to live on. He understands that young people are the key to that. Are demands for hard work, deep understanding of course material, and dedication from students not what we want from teachers anymore? I hope not.

Dr. Erler's unwavering dedication, compassion and concern for the education of his students is unquestionable. Dr. Erler has never, since I have known him, made it difficult or even a chore to communicate with him. Be it over a sandwich at lunchtime or a visit to his office during office hours; Dr. Erler has always made himself readily available to all of his students. In fairness to this student’s obvious newness to University life, perhaps he is not yet accustomed to University academia, in which a student is actually expected to use his book as a reading tool, rather than a coaster. University Professors are not babysitters; they are academics of the highest standing. They demand quality from their students not out of spite, fatigue or because they are looking forward to their one-year sabbatical, but as a means to stimulate independent thought.

As for the syllabus: the syllabus is meant to be a general guide subject to revision and change at the discretion of the Professor. Any true university student should understand this.

Study Guides: A study guide is not mandatory, nor is it often used in University settings. However, if this student wishes to be given a study guide, I know of many elementary school teachers that still offer study guides to their students.

Tests, if you read the previous then, NO COMMENT NECESSARY.

With regards to the teaching Assistant, they are not meant to replace the Professor nor are they meant as a substitute for reading the book. They are not a cheat-sheet. They are there simply for clarification.

In conclusion, I find it interesting that of the five reviews given to Dr. Erler four were A’s and one was a D+. If it were four D+’s and one A, there might be a legitimate grievance for Professor Erler’s teaching style. The former, however, merely proves that this is just another example of a disgruntled student who did not receive the grade they felt they deserved.

Capwell, write this for no other reason then to answer the phantom’s cry for help. The man in question is an astonishing philosopher, but I do prefer others above him. This work I have neither adorned nor filled with expansive expressions, or with pompous and magnificent words.
In all fairness to this phantom student, I will point out that no one until this time has ever academically challenged the phantom. So I tried to put myself in the phantom’s position and tried to think how I would be as a student who lacks discipline. This is not the student’s fault as I am sure that the public school system, coupled with uninvolved parenting, played a major part in the lack of self-motivation that is evident from this student’s writing. However, to be fair to the professor, the student shouldn’t mask his own weaknesses with the actions of another person. It is obvious that the student was under the impression that reading was not an instrumental necessity to passing a class. I know, big deal huh? Since the class was a 200 level course, I will take the risk of assuming that the phantom student was at the very least a sophomore. By your second year of college, I would hope that a student would care enough to read the Bill of Rights and the occasional newspaper. If the shoe... But if this were the phantom’s only lack of care for America and current events, I would stop here. But as this courageous rant continued, the professor’s behavior that was described struck me as odd. Not that the brave phantom would attempt to deceive us from spite. The accusation concerning “cutting remarks” is simply out of character for this professor.
OK, now the phantoms opinion about the tests. Study guide? Where in the Bill of Rights does it talk about study guides? I will strike that argument, I now recall that the phantom deems anything American unnecessary. The phantom has shown us that no one should encourage students to learn about their rights. It is not supportive and does not foster a nurturing environment. I have learned over time that the best study guide is the book(s). A good supplement to the book is showing up to class. I was not aware that study groups were in fact “you can do it” pep talks. The phantom has much to teach us. I was under the impression that study groups, with teacher’s assistants, were there to answer questions that were conceived in thought. Let us think for a moment, what kind of question would merit the answer, “it is in the book?” The phantom is clearly looking for a support group that offers donuts, coffee, and hugs. Maybe one should be provided.
When you lack information, look for it? Dial zero on any campus phone and ask for the professor by name. That is what I do. Secondly, you could always ask the professor. Just don’t mention anything about America and what you should already know prior to enrolling in the class. As for office hours, I recommend appointments. This would require that you dial zero, ask for the professor by name, and then engage in speech requesting an appointment. I myself have taken this challenging burden upon my shoulders. In fairness, our courageous phantom lacks resourcefulness. I do not want to be too hard on the phantom. Perhaps she needs tutoring, discipline, and motivation. But I hope the phantom will read this and realize that he or she is no puppet. Cut the strings that you have tied upon yourself. When that is done, you will realize that it is you alone, and no one else, that earns the grade you receive. Take heart phantom, your day of academic maturity is at hand.

I have never looked forward to going to class, except when I was enrolled in Psci 314. He is the most eloquent speaker, I have ever had the pleasure listening to. When grading him on this site, I was dissapointed that the highest grade for speaking ability was only an A+, he deserves much higher. Don't take my word for it, if you have the chance take a class with him, even if you're not a political science major. In my experience at Cal State, Dr. Erler is one of the finest instructors there. The only thing I could say bad about Dr. Erler, is that he is on leave this year, so students don't get a chance to experience his classes. He is very caring about his students and their success. Erler is incredibly knowledgable about his field and passes that knowledge on to his students. He is always available and willing to help students and answer questions. He will never turn you down and will discuss the problem until you understand it completely. His classes are incredibly enjoyable. He challenges you to think things through, where other Professors lecture their dogma and don't ask students to think. Dr. Erler's test are very fair and he grades them justly. He is a very eloquent speaker and knows several languages.
