Most teachers i have had do one of two things that i hate:

1. lecture non-stop without asking for student input.

2. Put a bunch of information directly from the book(s) on the powerpoint or overhead and read it to the class verbatim, which shows that they dont really have a whole lot to contribute to the lecture because they dont really know the subject.

Patty is guilty of neither of these bad habits and it makes this somewhat boring subject bearable. All of her lectures showed that she truly understood the subject and the books were just support material. But she is not an easy teacher. She pushes her students to really think critically, and expects you to put some pride into your work. She is not for the slackers -We wrote 3 papers for a total of about 15 pages- we were supposed to write 4 papers but she was kind enough to realize that students have other classes to write for and dropped it. Other than that she was the best lecturer out of the 4 teachers i had. If you gotta take a history course then i would suggest Patty Seleski.

The Nutty Professor- Marine Biology

Mixed feelings on this guy. Typically, marine biology is a pretty interesting subject especially when you visist the beach often. I think he could have made it a little more interesting although to his credit he did try to relate the subject to everyday life. He can be a bit lazy because his lecture material wasnt always well prepared, and it took him until 3 weeks into the semester to make a syllybus that was updated for 2006. He's a hardcore, somewhat bitter enviromentalist, but he is pretty funny. I like how he would tell the class to shut the f**k up when people were being rude during his lectures. In his efforts to try and be politically correct he winds up offending or singling out every "minority" or female in the class. The highlights of his class were all the extra credit oppurtunities he gives you, and the fact that he lets you retake certain parts of exams that you scored low on. If you can handle the crude humor, politically incorrect comments, and lack of preparation on his part, then you should take him.

An incredible teacher!

Very friendly and motivated to teach the class. I would recommend her for any class she teaches!
Her lectures were very interesting and she kept everyones attention.
There were no tests, only 4-6 page case writeups and analysis every couple weeks.
Class participation was a large focus in the class and we were teamed up for group debates and discussions.

If you want to learn then go else where.

I learned nothing.... We watched all the presidents men and were quized on it.
The teacher never arrived to class on time and when he did he would leave after five minutes to go and make copies. This would leave the class waiting for 15 to 25 minutes. He doesnt read what he grades and grades poorly. I recieved my 5 page final paper with no red ink on it execept for the last page. On that page this was written "You need more quotes, 67" That was it. When confonted with tha paper he could not tell what the paper was about or what was wrong with it. On the brighter side his tests were easy but because they were based on movies.

I will say nothing else bad about this teacher except for the fact he tends to fail white males with shaved or buzzed hair cuts.

Loved this Prof.!

Prof. Sawyer was by far my favorite teacher since starting at CSUSM. Her lectures are thorough and extremely thought-provoking. She forced me to re-examine my own views of myself and my racial world view. (which is always a good thing) She is very honest and open about her own life, freely sharing of herself about what it was like growing up an African American.
