The exams were challenging, the material was challenging, but that made it all the more better. It is NOT a blow off class and you MUST study but if you do know for sure that you will fly by.

Hixon is an awesome woman she's got cool stories about meeting old chemists like Glen Seaborg and Linus Pauling. Some people didn't like her tangents but I thought she was quirky and cool. Her lectures always last the full class periods but labs were usually over in 30 to an hour

SHe is always available to help in lab. She is always available to talk after class. She does not grade on a curve or give bonus points but the exam will through out the lowest test score. I took this class along side calculus and studied my ass off and came out with an A. The average score was waaaaay low but its because people werent studying. Lots of people assume they will get blow off classes but this isn't one.

Dont worry though anybody can get through it if they try! I am a high school drop out who made Fs all through high school and I made one of if not the highest grade in this class. I talked a lot with Hixon after classes and found out she is a wonderfull woman. She's got a lot to tell

There are I think 4 exams (I dont remember). Its better to follow the notes she has instead of the book, but then again I had the wrong book so that might be why I stuggled there :P SHe gives notes that have everything to do with exams.

Exams are multiple choice but they are hard! The exam questions are harder often than the practice questions so you must work these problems until you understand the concepts! After this class, physics should be a breeze.

One more thing to add.... for math students who were never taught word problems - this class will cure your struggles. I am in Calc II and until her class I had never done a single word problem. This class is full of them and even though they were basic algebra I struggled with them until I got them down now I have no trouble with word problems. Valuable asset to my education

Would recommend her to anybody who wants to be challenged!

Freshman comp wasn't what I dreaded it to be!

This is a class that you absolutely must work hard in to get an A. Although some people are freightened by this prospect I walked away with nearly 100% because I dedicated a reasonable amount of time to writing well researched material.

The course consists of 5 essays and a portfolio containing 3 of your favorites at the end of class. At times a few of the essays may seem bumped together but all in all if you work it shouldn't be a problem. I'd say 80% of the class wouldn't turn their papers in on time and would bitch about the class when they got points off. I think she was a fair teacher and she likes to talk to students. I stayed after class with a group of students on a number of different occasions and we just talked about writing it was pretty cool.

OH and heres the kicker, I made an A+ and I had never writen a paper in my life. I am a high school drop out. So if I can make an A anybody can

History became enjoyable for the first time....

I had Dr. Hellstern for my first semester at TCC. I was a high school drop out who despised high school ciriculum especially history. When I took Hellsterns class he found a way to make history not only interesting but engaging to me. I ended up with an A+ in the class because I was excited to go home and study. He is a thrilling professor, he's always got something to say to keep the classes exciting. He goes off on what you think are tangents but always relate to the material in the end. You must read in his classes to get an A but as long as you do your part he will do his, he is incredibly fair and doesn't form any bias against any students. He is wonderfull and I have him again for this semester!

This was always my worst subject. However, after a few classes, it became my favorite class. Darin Combs has helped me with other classes, and provided an excellent learning source. He is incredibly intellegent and fair at grading. His test are not difficult and you will learn much more than just history in his class. Adult students deserve to be treated as equals by an instructor. It's a funny thing how often teachers who treat adult students without sensitivity or respect are former or current high school or junior high teachers. They can't seem to let go of their bad "other job" habits.
This instructor has no idea (or more chillingly, maybe she has) of the damage she does.

Avoid this experience if you can, frustrating even if you do well.

Ok, not everyone is cut out to teach. But if you do choose to, you should accept that students want and require feedback. It's not a contest between instructor/student. This instructor guards his present and past exams with such passion, you'd think they were printed on gold leaf. His lecture exams are written poorly, sometimes downright misleadingly. He might give assistance during an exam to someone who asks a specific question, but then fails to clue in the rest of the class on his mistake on the exam. Most instructors are not so defensive or insecure on this point, but he needs to step back and look at what he's not doing to help, and what he does to actually hurt. He does not throw out a question when it obviously was misleading or miswritten. Test reviews are hurried and no, you cannot take it with you.
His lab exams - he does put a lot of effort into these, which is good - but then they ultimately fail their objective, because his punitive testing methods do not allow you to learn from them. It is hard to get access to your graded exams throughout the semester. And his lab exams on cell mitosis - they measure experience, not knowledge of the subject matter. Hey, we're not working in labs, so what's with all the ambiguous cell mitosis lab exam questions?
To sum up, he seems to resent students and his tests are unfair. Won't give him an 'F' though, because of his efforts in setting up the lab exams.

An excellent class to learn about the American Frontier

This teacher treats everybody with respect. Every day he would come to class late and the first thing he did everytime was to throw the small wooden podium from atop the table, across the room at the wall. This is a good class for someone who doesn't intend to learn anything about Chemistry. He gives 200 points extra credit to everyone because without it everyone would fail. Even so he still gives grades according to what he thinks of you and what can you say when you will do badly on his ridiculous exams. I had to confront him in his office to insure that I received the grade I earned. He does not grade lab reports but you won't know that unless you catch him racing through them and applying a check mark indicating that he received the report. You could write that the teacher is an idiot on your lab report and he would never know it. One time we were to have a 50 min. exam but he did not tell anyone that the exam would be on scantron sheets until the day of the test. He then sent students to the campus bookstore to buy some which took 20 min from test time. No one was able to complete the test and all unfinished questions were marked wrong. He refused to make any allowance for his mistake and we all received lousy scores. A chemistry teacher who tests with scantron sheets is lazy and does not care if the students are learning or not. He does not believe students are smart enough to learn Chemistry and he resents the ones who do want to learn it. He makes very subtle racist and sexist remarks.

Hates Students

Microbiology was the class I looked forward to the most. It could have been the most interesting but because of this teacher it wasn't. This class was the worst experience I had at TCC. I have had many wonderful teachers at TCC but everytime I think of the school this terrible teacher dominates my memory. She is the most hateful person I ever met. She told the class that she loved her job, but forgot that students are her job. She called the class a bunch of illiterates. She insulted people when ever someone asked a question; in fact she allowed no questions because she feared revealing the fact that her knowledge was very limited. She warned us that we would need to quit all outside activities including jobs if we hoped to pass her class. I guess she decided to disregard the fact that TCC was built to serve the adult learner and adults have to have jobs as well as many other responsibilities. This terrible teacher with her hateful manner and harsh words and dirty looks gave me my worst memory of college so far. I even have had bad dreams about her.

Thank You Professor for Opera.

This is a very good instructor. For assignments she had the class visit the beautiful Philbrook Museum of Art. We were assigned the task of attending a ballet of Romeo and Juliet. Another assignment was to view the film Schindler's List. All of these assignments we were allowed to when we could or as a group. She got us out of the classroom to see the Arts first hand. She did not have to do that. She could have given us dull readind assignments and tested us on that. All we had to do then was to write a paragraph about the experience. In this way Dr. Strange opened up my eyes to the arts and to culture. I've done these things with my family many times since as well as opera and we all enjoy it so much. This class gave me something valuable that I could pass on to my family.

A life changing coach

This was a great weight training class because of a great teacher.
