He is fair, intelligent, and one of the best in the department--makes you work hard--his classes are not easy--lots of reading. Extremely intelligent and knowledgable about the subject. His lectures were interesting. He actually cares about his students and wants them to do well. He is always available to answer questions and help. The exams were extremely fair, no surprises or attempts to stump you, but he does expect you to learn. He is encouraging and really gets you thinking. He taught history in such a way as to make it interesting and understandable to today's minds. However, he did make jokes of some people in the class, and it didn't bother him to read everybody's grades out in class, either. His exams - lets just say you can never study enough for them. Even if you study everything, it's not a guarantee that you will do well on the exams. He asks things that are not covered and he asks questions in such a way that it is difficult to fully understand what answer he is looking for. He makes you feel very stupid and incompetent when you don't do well on the exams, but he prides himself on making his exams so difficult that you CAN'T do them well. He actually brags about this. Dr. H is one of the very best professors I have ever had. Contrary to what the other reviewer has said, Dr. Hochenauer allows for all views to be heard in his class as long as the student can back it up. He is extremely knowledgeable of his subject area, and makes it real by applying it to our world. I have learned so much about British literature, writing, and myself by being in his class. He is highly amused by himself. He does encourage plenty of classroom participation but does not give much attention or discussion to ideas and opinions that do not match his own. His lectures are wandering and hard to follow,he even loses his own place several times. Also, many of his views on life are depressing and gloomy and he seems to argue for the entire class to accept these ideas. Overall I found him to be a very frustrating professor. His exams are fair and easly to comprehend, they are completely based on class lectures which are clear and direct. His lectures are very intresting, he finds ways to keep you intrested in things that wouldn't otherwise be interesting. He's very lively, optimistic and motivating. She would tell you in class that it looked good but when you got it back graded, it looked as if it was bled on from all the red marks. She is also very strict in regards to school policies like cheating and other such stuff. Willis is pretty strict when it comes to his classroom policies. He also expects a lot from you (and he says its because your a graduating senior). There is so much work to do but sometimes he makes his lectures fun with crazy pictures on his powerpoint slides. Although, he doesn't lecture much. His tests suck! He uses essay questions for the majority of it and his m/c are multiple answer.
