I honestly don't enjoy math very much. I get very frustrated and confused in math class. I had Brian as my teacher for my last math course ever to transfer, statistics. Although in some ways it was still hell, Brian made is better. He is fun and entertaining to watch as a teacher. He is fair as far as the homework assigned and he gives outstanding lectures. Also, he told the class that he is dislexic and I was really impressed that he is a math proffessor. If you have to take math take it with Brian. He's an excellent teacher.

I am not sure I understand what is going on here

I am really kind of upset by some of the reviews that I have been reading. Joe is undeniably an amazing teacher, if you focus soley on the act of lecturing. He also cares so much about the natural world and the way that humans interact with it. This is what I loved about him. He is so extremely knowledgeable. However, before I took his class, I heard such mixed reviews- people either love him or hate him. How can so many people hate him when he is such an amazing teacher? There are so many rumors that fly around. As a female, I can say that he is incredibly attractive-both physically and in his passion for his profession, which is rare to find in a man. Reading some of these reviews, I sense a lot of jealousy, both from girls who are upset that he doesnt pay all of his attention soley to them, and from males who are upset that obviously every girl is infatuated by him. This does not excuse some of his behavior however. I know he may cross the line at times. I find it sad and disapointing that such an amazing, inspiring teacher discredits himself in this way. My hope for him is that he can begin to see how his actions may hurt others, namely his vulnurable students who trust him. Ulitimately, he is hurting himself and that is a shame because he has so much to offer this world and his students. SO my advice is, go into his class with your guards up, no matter how charming he is, because you are there for your education and nothing else matters. He does not, contrary to popular belief, force his opinions on others, or yell at his students when they ask questions. He may be in a bad mood at times, but consider how many students he has to deal with each semester. He is a kind person. If you need extra help, ask him but really you should go to the tutor. Girls, dont fall for his extreme charm. Get what you are there for, education, everything will be fine! I would love to hear any comments or insight that anyone can give me on this review--am I being realistic or too forgiving?

Political science teacher knows politics

Yolanda Bellisimo is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She has almost no homework and her textbooks are very cheap. She only has two essay exams that each ask two questions, but she gives you a bank of questions that she might ask beforehand, and maybe a paper. She is willing to take time out to make sure that you understand the subject material, and encourages in-class debates of political and historical issues. She knows politics backwards and fowards, but doesn't flaunt her intelligence. She isn't easy, but motivates you to finish the class. If you aren't into politics or history, take an easier teacher. But if you want to know more about political science and history, take her class.
NB: If you're a member of AGS, be sure to invite her to the TAD as early as possible, she is taken very early.

The best counselor at College of Marin

If you are ever confused about which classes you need to take at College of Marin for transferring or graduation, make an appointment with Bessie Ng-Jung at COM Counseling department. Youll get the best academic advice from Bessie who will guide you to reach your goal.

Selecting proper classes for any major can be very challenge; Bessie knows very well which classes you should take for all majors. One of the Business department counselors at Sonoma State University told me that I was one of few students who prepared so well for transferring that make the registration process much easier than others. I wouldn't have done so well without Bessies helpful guidance during the years at COM. I highly recommend her as your number one choice for academic advice at College of Marin.

I was expecting a man and when Professor Cirese walked in I was pleasantly surprised. I must say that the class as well as the professor were totally and completely professional and to top things off she co-authored the textbook.
If you want to learn about human sexuality this is the class to take. I was impressed from start to finish and the fact that she threw in a little religion and her guest speakers brought interesting topics just made my whole experience worth while.
The best of luck and thank you for making my life a little brighter Professor.

She's straight to the point, a lecturer who uses everyday situations to relate complicated concepts, quite funny, unique, and sarcastic. She does not suffer fools well, so questions should be ones you truly can't find the answer for yourself. Has a great deal of compassion if she knows you've tried.

She is completely brainwashed to think that "Western Scientists" are the only people who practice real science and therefore are the only ones that can know what is right and what is wrong. According to her we cannot talk about a Chinese, Indian or Islamic Science, because the word "science" and it's method belongs to the Western World, but at the same time, some how, she believes that "Western Science is Universal" ! (must be god given!) Also since there is only one science, we don't need to say Western Science, to differentiate it from other "methods"! Using this highly sophisticated, clever and cunning mental reasoning she, in her mind, is able to "clearly demonstrate" the superiority of Western Science over the other methods, which, since we can not call them sciences, there is only one other option and that is; they must be hokus-pokus! Moreover according to her; "The Western Scientific Method" is the only method that is accurate, and highly superior to everything else, so naturally, Western Scientists should decide on important issues like vaccinating people (no matter where they live)! Since people in Third World Countries don't know anything about science, and are therefore irrational, they cannot decide for themselves, so it would be ok to impose our superior knowledge on them. Not only that, but it is ok to experiment on them too, "because they will die without our drugs anyway!" (exact quote from one of her lectures) First she creates the "other" in her students minds, which are the people who live outside the western world, then she defines them as some sort of incompetent savages, so that she can impose her own savagery on them. Well Jamie Deneris, I have bad news for you. Your superior scientific method is nothing but a very arrogant, self centered, narrow and hazardous point of view, and as long as you don't respect and are open to other points of view you will not learn a thing in life. Teaching is not a one way process, you can only teach as much as you can learn. Also perhaps some of us don't want formaldehyde, phenols, mercury, aluminum, endotoxins and numerous other hazardous substances in our veins, not to mention accidental SV-40 contamination. Perhaps people in some third world countries ARE CAPABLE OF READING LIFE and don't need to control it the way we do, to be able to live "healthy" lives. Perhaps their understanding of healthy, is much different than ours. Of course there are some countries where people die because of not having enough medical supplies and knowledge, but there are also cultures where people respect and trust the workings of life a lot more than we do, and know how to live in harmony with it, (rather than work against it and try to control it.) without needing as much medicine and violent interventions as we do.(Not to mention eating healthy to begin with), but of course since they are not like us, they must be wrong! It is also ridiculous to try to prove the superiority of western science by saying that "we live longer", Is that all that matters, a number? How about the quality of life? Do materialism make for a better life? So the correct answer to Jamie Deneris's extremely dumb exam question; "What is the difference between science and religions?" There is absolutely no difference, you can use either one productively or get completely brainwashed by it.

Dr. Loeser is a great asset to College of Marin.

For me, Dr. Loeser's arrival at COM could hardly have been better timed. Chem 114 was a class I had been putting off taking as I knew it would be particularly demanding for me and I expected to find it hard to achieve a high grade. Added to that, was the fact that her predecessor's reputation was not exactly one that had people beating down the door to get into the class. When I heard there would be a new Chem teacher last semester I decided to get it out of the way as it was a prerequisite for my major. I can honestly say that, although the day which included lecture, discussion and lab was intolerably long, I actually enjoyed this class thanks to Dr. Loeser's teaching skill, thoroughness and dedication to her students.
Dr. Loeser's lectures were well organised, concepts were clearly explained with examples, and each type of problem learned was gone over several times, giving students plenty of chances to grasp the method. One of the most significant plus points was the way she wrote everything the students needed to know on the board. I think all those who have taken this class would at least agree that the notes from the lectures (if copied faithfully from the board) were comprehensive and reliable.
The tests were fair and NOT multiple choice scantron tests. This allowed her the flexibility to give points to students who were able to demonstrate that they understood the theory even if the answers to the problems were not exactly right (something which certainly worked in my favor on more than one occasion).
The labs were interesting and challenging to those who, like me, had never taken this subject before. Dr. Loeser expected all work (apart from a small take-home section) on the labs to be finished before students were allowed to leave, but she would stay long after the time the class was scheduled to finish if any students needed the extra time (again, I benefitted here).
This brings me to the final remark about Dr. Loeser. Her dedication to her students is truly remarkable. She is clearly passionate about her subject, knows it inside out, and wants her students to do as well as she can help them to. She was always in her office and available and must have spent enormous amounts of time going over masses of homework, labs, and tests, and preparing lectures.

I Suggest Not Taking His English Courses

Taylor gave a lot of busy work. Not because of what he knows or how well he teaches, but because he is a normal, decent, sincere human being, which is quite hard to find nowadays. He is not pretentious, he is not judgemental, he doesn't have prejudices and most important of all he listens. Even though his schedule is very busy, he travels from East Bay, and he is a part time teacher at COM, he will find time for you if necessary. He is a person, not a machine, not a 21st century super scientist (like most other science teachers, who claim to know everything but miss the most basic understanding of life itself!). No matter who you are, he treats you with respect and as his equal. If the person in front of him has something to teach, he will learn. He teaches what is right, not what is politically correct. I am a former College of Marin student who never took a biology class with Mueller, but would like to respond to the "larger picture" of the many controversial reviews that have been written.

First, it is the College's responsibility to provide a quality education to each and every student it serves. What an instructor does outside the classroom, really is no one else's business. The problem here is when an instructor's business becomes public information, whether it is inappropriate conduct or not, several things happen as a result:

1.) The primary mission of the college (to serve the students' educational needs) is distracted. Students receive more than they bargained for in the classroom and this diverts from receiving a quality education.

2.) The reputation of the instructor/professor becomes obstructed.

3.) The educational institution is seen in a negative light.

Whether the rumors are true or not that Joe Mueller has had sex with his students, before or after class, on or off campus, it is simply inappropriate for the instructor's private affairs to be made public AND it is also inappropriate (if the rumors are false) for students to be posting such flaming false accusations on a public internet teacher review websites.

I can believe that Joe Mueller may be an incredibly excellent instructor, full of wonderful information about the natural world in which we live in. And whether or not he mixes his political views into his lectures should seem unimportant as no one agrees with everyone politically. If a student does not agree with his political views, they should simply take it with a grain of salt.

The fact of the matter is that Mueller has tenure which is a powerful word meaning that, unless he engages in illegal or harmful activity of any kind, the College cannot remove his position as instructor.

One of COM's finest

Walter is a fantastic guy and an excellent instructor. I never really got to know Walter personally and I regret that. Honestly, he is the kind of guy you just want to listen to speak -- very down to Earth and has a lot to say. Many find him intimidating but he is so much more than that. He is sure of himself and he is solid in his knowledge and his beliefs, he lets you know by detailing his past exploits and incorporating them into his lectures. You are a good student match for Brailoff if you too are sure of yourself. And you too will have to be determined in order to reach him outside of class, he will respond, the question may be when.

This falls by the wayside though when you realize that the grade you receive in this class is literally in your hands. Yes, to receive an A there are a lot of questions on the three take home exams (between 170-220 on each to be exact) and a substantial amount of essay work along with reading material. However the answers are all right in front of you, it only takes putting them to paper and it couldn't get easier than that, simply put, you must be lazy or carefree to receive anything less. The final will surprise you though, and get a bit tougher, but again he gives you exactly what you need to study, word for word. He is not big on details, his syllabus is short and sweet, and you have to be independant to a point. I had a difficult time nailing him down to exact due dates and detailed instructions for essays/exams. He is aware of this and as such is quite flexible. It is not unlike him to shrug his shoulders and say "eh" when you ask him for more detail, so flow with it. He is option friendly, as well. You can do even or odd numbered questions, or you can do half of them only or all of them and add 5%.

He likes feedback from his class during class, so don't be afraid to give it. That seemed to create a sort of repertoire between myself and him. I always had things to discuss with him and he was always more than happy to engage me. This was important to me. It is impossible to study Sociology without the political interplay and while my conservative self took this course rather apprehensively, I wound up pleasantly surprised and in awe of my professor whom I gather is not so conservative.

Intense. The learning matter in his class can be intense, the work is intense, Mike Brailoff is intense. Log onto Google, search Michael Brailoff and see some of his negotiating activity, you'll see. No doubt most students feel intensly about him one way or the other.

I for one, intensely feel he is a terrific teacher, a strong man, and one determined human being.

I can't wait to have him in Psychology!

Brilliant and challenging is he!

With a sparkling (silly) personality and complete approachability he takes what most expect to be an easy class and makes it downright difficult to pass, minus those whose IQ is nearing genius. The problem is, the man is so smart that this stuff is as basic to him as breathing is to everyone else. You're already half way through the semester before you realize what you should even be studying for because it is all in his lectures and for many it is too late by that time so passing becomes a blessing. I recommend writing down every single word he says even those you don't think matter or even better record the lecture and listen to it religously. And take advantage of his extreme helpfulness, friendliness and availability! (Don't be too hard on yourself, like one professor said getting a B in this class is like getting an A in any other Bio class and so on...)

Great instructor -- go in with an open mind!

It seems that many of Joe's reviews on this site would give a prospective student an unclear idea of what to expect. In fact, going into Joe's class this past semester, I was one of those students; I was ready for a non-stop conservative-bashing girl-flirting extravaganza based on what I'd read on here. I ended up with one of the best experiences I'd ever had in a scientific course.

I watched Joe like a hawk, waiting to see him hit on the girls in my class, ready to laugh to myself about it. It never happened. In fact, he conversed with males most often in this class, as they were the ones asking the most questions. (This is not a sexist remark -- I'm merely pointing out that his supposed affinity for girls above all else was not apparent in my class.)

Joe at first comes off as though he doesn't care about you individually. I went in to talk to him once or twice in the first couple weeks of the semester and felt like he was just trying to brush me off as quickly as possible. What I quickly learned, though, is that Joe has hundreds of students -- over 100 in his two intro to biology classes alone -- and that this makes it difficult for him to give the time he'd prefer to give to each student. I learned this because, going in to talk to him later in the semester when students weren't bothering him as often, he was caring and attentive.

His lectures are excellent. He loves biology and does a great job explaining it. I have always been horrible with the sciences and this was the first enjoyable experience I'd had in any natural/biological science course. It's true, his tests are almost entirely based on his lectures, so take good notes. However, if you have friends who have taken the course in the past who have good notes, borrow theirs to study -- Joe has fine-tuned his lectures over the years and stays very consistent semester-to-semester in the material he presents. Having your own lecture notes as well as someone else's from previous semesters provides an excellent study guide.

And of course, how can I write a review without commenting on Joe's politically liberal stance? The first section of the class -- of four sections -- had a lot of political material in it, because it pertained to the environment and what he was teaching. Honestly, I was floored by what he had to say -- he isn't one who just hashes out cliched anti-conversative rants. He sticks to the biology he has to teach us and how it pertains to current events and politics. It was very fascinating, and honestly, there was extremely little of it past the first section of the class. Many say Joe's political lecture material is distracting, but to me, it was nearly nonexistent past the first couple weeks of class, and that was actually very disappointing to me! I had talked to students who had him in previous semesters who felt the same way I do.

Joe also loves humor and tries to make his lectures as comfortable and light as possible. Humor is a big part of that, so if you want a dead-serious experience, don't take his class.

Joe, on the first day of class, warned us, "I talk about sex and politics in here. If you don't like that, there is another biology teacher at COM who does not incorporate any of that into the lecture material." Thus, if you don't like what you've heard about Joe Mueller, remember that there is always another intro to biology teacher at COM. But, for me, I found Joe's negative reviews on here distracting and distasteful, and unfair to a dedicated and efficient teacher.

A great instructor

This is a video course. There are 13 videos and you have to write summaries on them. It was a great course but I would have liked to have lectures as well. Victor gives very good lectures and has a lot of knowledge on History topics. I was lucky that I was also enrolled in one of his lecture classes at the same time. I enjoy listening to his lectures. This is a great course but take Victor's lecture classes if you can.
