This was my first class in almost a decade, so I was a little nervous about getting reacquainted with learning in the academic setting. Mr. Johnson gave clear, interesting lectures that were easy to understand. He made clear exactly which material we were responsible for learning. His exams were straightforward and graded fairly. There was little study required outside class, which I found a disadvantage; in retrospect, I probably could have taken Contracts at the same time. I highly recommend this class to anyone who is considering a career in any aspect of the law. It will give you an excellent overview of the legal system in an interesting and friendly setting.

Bravo!

This instructor obviously cares about making all students understand the material. He makes everything so interesting wich gets your attention at all times. He will give assignments that help you learn and tons of examples that are at your level of understanding.
His tests are a little hard but he does let you bring in your rule books for his legal classes. He will also tell you that you can write what you want in the book, so almost like an open book test depending on what you put in there.
He should teach more classes at ACC.

Talks too much about nothing

This professor talks way too much about nothing that has to do with the course. So if you want to learn something I suggest taking a class with someone else.
He reads straight out of the book instead of lecturing.

He will expect you to be prepared at all classes and call you out. He is the only professor that teaches this course so there is no way around him. You also have to take this class before you can take anything else (unless intro).
He is the head of the legal program and if you call him before the semester starts he will help you pick out your classes.
He is the type of person that you either like or hate.
Good luck!

boorish, leftwing ideologue

First, let me make clear I was in his class for two days. "Easy" Dorsett made it clear on the first day that we had a lot to unlearn, unless we were already leftwing zealots like he, if we wanted to pass his course. His rambling syllabus included a diatribe about logical fallacies that would've been useful had his personal political remarks fallen in line with them. Instead, he commits the logical fallacy of "non sequitur" by, for example, calling pro-lifers inconsistent because they generally don't oppose the death penalty -- even though comparing fetuses and those convicted of capital offenses is comparing apples and oranges. As an example of his authoritarian classroom manner, he expressed contempt when questioned about offering 20+ years of appellate review for fetuses targeted for abortion the same way we grant appeals to convicted murderers. He also made use of a radical leftist tabloid (Texas Observer) in his class. During the second day of casses he asked our class, "If you're so smart and special, why aren't you at SMU?" I asked, "If you're so smart and special, why aren't you teaching there?" I was asked to drop his course, and I very happily did when he reiterated that I would have to "unlearn" too much to pass his class.

Reasonable and Accommodating

I disagree with the last review I read on here. I've had Patrick Marcyniuk and found him to be very reasonable. The nature of this class encompasses ALOT of material and he covers it well, considering everything that he has to cover. He does teach alot from the book, but in a class where there is so much to know, I find it helpful to be able to refer back and forth from lecture notes to the book. He tells you what to expect on the exams and you have to study. He's very reasonable and will try to accommodate you whenever possible. He explains difficult concepts in ways that make them easier to understand.

Dr. Staples! Her tests are horrible! I don't have the averages, but there is another review other than me and you will see the test reviews. I dropped by his office one time to meet him and I got the feeling that he would rather not be bothered. Most of our correspondence was in the form of e-mails. I tried to engage him in conversation a time or two, but he would just ignore my comments and reply in a standard monosyllablic manner: "Yes", "No", or "Grunt". It seems to me that if you don't like teaching, do something else.

I found his tests frustrating because, no matter how hard I studied, I still made an 85. Two hours studying...Twenty hours studying...it did not matter. Some questions just required a photographic memory to answer.

However, I was able to make an A in the course because Mr. Garrahan provided an opportunity for extra credit. He was generous in that respect.

Overall, I don't think I would recommend him to anyone.

I wish they were all like him!

Brilliant teacher.
