Hands back homeworks late - lucky there was a good TA this semester. What determines grades is a mystery. One minor problem with the grading is it is somewhat binary. A big section is often ENTIRELY wrong if one mistake is made within it. This isn't a big deal though, Rice is a top school, so maybe we should be expected to deal with this. The real problem is: This guy is a complete, anal, asshole. If you slip up in any way, dont expect any slack, you will be FUCKED. After failing to *register* for a homework (who ever heard of that anyway?) my partner and I recieved a 0 on it, a week before it was due. Bam, automatic zero. Talking with the prof after class revealed that he just didn't give a shit, and considered that 12.5% of our grade being gone at the outset of class was "no big deal" Other students got a big fat ZERO for failing to email him when they finished their project, even though it was sitting there with a time stamp that clearly indicated they had stoppped working on it before it was due. This guy is on sabattical next year. Hopefully he will experience something that loosens him up a bit, or maybe he will just stay away. The point of a teacher should be to TEACH. His being an asshole served to do nothing but impose stress, and make me dislike the subject, when it could have been a very pleasant semester.
