His beard is an inspiration to us all. If one were walking through the woods and saw him they might think that they were seeing bigfoot. If you went to Vietnam you would most probably see him in the jungle, still killing the vietcong with his awesome beard. As the world changes, and we are not sure of much anything anymore, we know that that Mr Baker will always be wearing his beard, and that it will be wilder and bushier than ever before.

The five genres of the epidaectics:

B - BEARD!!!!
A - aepicaectic
k - kekidaectic
E - epidactic
R - repidaectic

READ this before you READ the other reviews

Obviously the positive reviews written about this teacher are authored by the teacher himself. His class is not for the lazy-minded student!

Dr. Brinkley is an excellent professor. He has high standards and cares for the students he teaches. Many students do misread his serious nature the wrong way. He is serious about his profession and his work, yes. But he also has a great deal of fun teaching. He knows so much and does not simply let students get by with a mimimum amount of effort. So much of the time, standards are dropped for good education. When students who have had it easy through high school and then have a class with much more difficult professor like Dr. Brinkley, they think the problem is with the teacher and no with themselves. For this reason, Dr, Brinkley has a reputation for being difficult. Anyone contemplating taking a course with Dr. Brinkley should think twice. They should first decide whether or not they really want to learn things. Second, they need to think about how much effort they are willing to put into a course. His classes are not for the lazy. They are for the hard-working student who desires to learn. Dr. Brinkley has a wealth of knowlege that he wants to share, yet when I walk around school and hear his students complaining about the work load in his class, I find it hard to keep my opinion to myself. Dr. Brinkley deserves an A+ for his efforts. I hope that some day he will be recognized for the wonderful man and excellent teacher he is.

a great man and teacher

i feel this is a good professor. he is one of those teachers who allow the student to grow and think for them selves. so do not be fooled by other LU students who will say he is bad. many liberty students like to be spoon fed and there for have problems with this kind of teacher. it is sickening that a student would blame their short comings on a teacher rather than their slow mindness. i am a former IB student and i think by WORLD STANDARDS HE IS GREAT. so do not listen to other LU students they are merely intellectually challenged.

Great Teacher

This class is really challenging, but fun. I love the way Professor Baker thinks. He is very philosophical but its not weird, just thought provoking.

The speeches require much organization and thought but they are all different and relate to real life. To be honest, the class seems to drag a little near the end of the semester, but overall the class is exciting.

The midterm and final are essays which may be a little too complicated because it is required that we incorporate so many thoughts into one paper.

Great, challenging professor

This is not an easy class, but it's good. You learn a ton and get experience in public speaking. The thing is that it's just project after project and they're all stressful. The topics upon which students are required to speak are original and require a lot of thought. There are no in-class tests; the tests are essays, but they are not easy either. It's a good class.

Terrible class

This is the worst class. The guy is very nice as a person but it's so hard to listen to him speak. Also, most of the semester, we haven't had to go to class. It's a ridiculous waste of money. Honestly we all threw $900 or whatever away by taking this class. Don't take it, whatever you do.

Not a Favorite

I would never recommend Dr. Brinkley to any student. His homework assignments are usually just reading, but his quizzes are nearly impossible! If you read the assigned story, you are supposed to remember impossible facts and figures. And the worst are the tests. Only the author would remember the points he expects you to know. I went through high school making A's and B's in honors & AP English courses, but I was afraid I wouldn't pass this course because his tests were crazy. They made no sense. We never really discussed the book or story as I have done in other college English courses. There is rarely any group work.

I was once questioned by him about cheating because I had discussed an in-class assignment with another student. We were watching a video of all things and had to answer the questions from a handout. The guy sitting next to me didn't catch something so I told him what I had gotten and that was considered cheating. I've never heard of such a thing.

As for his personality, he is a nice guy but really does not relate well to students. He gets excited about the puritans and their laws, but that's about it.
This was the only class I dreaded the entire sememster.

A good teacher

He's a fun teacher that interacts well with students and teaches us basic skills and makes us apply them with the homework. He has his doctrate from the Univ. of Edinborough in Scotland -- pretty impressive.

I had him for 17th Century English LIterature and for 18th Century English Literature, and he was outstanding in both classes. He demonstrates a solid grasp of the subject matter, he presents the material in a meaningful way, he makes the material interesting and entertaining, and he applies the works to modern life. He was one of the best professors I had in college.

Taught from Cliff's Notes.

Dr. Pogemiller, as the Dean of the English Department, taught an English Novels class from Cliff's Notes!!! I would rather walk barefoot through raw sewage than take a class from him, but unfortunately, he taught upper level required classes, including Modern Grammar and English Literature (Romantics period). His favorite poet was Wordsworth, and he seemed more in tune with this dead poet than the classes he taught. I got good grades in that class because of my own efforts. The best reading I did IN class was the latest Reader's Digest. DO NOT take a class with him if you can avoid at all.
