Dr. Crawford, however, makes the class worth it. TAKE THE CLASS WITH HIM. I cannot imagine taking this with someone else.

COME TO CLASS!! I can't stress this enough. If you come to class and take notes, the exams are perfectly reasonable. He tests from his notes, not the book, so if you're just trying to read the chapters in the book you'll be reading about things you may not be tested on and missing material. you can drop your lowest test grade.

Go to SI sessions and his office hours if you to. I'd suggest going to the SI sessions just because it forces you to study.

This class will be especially difficult for anyone who has no prior experience or knowledge in the field of Special Education.
It is pretty fast paced and there is a huge project due at the end of the semester which should take atleast about a month or two of pretty hard work. You will learn a great deal about students and other people with disabilities, about the laws, how to evaluate and identify students with disabilities, and how to accomodate them (ei: EIP's, 504 plans etc.) You will also learn a fair amount about most of the major disabilities, their causes and characteristics. Reading assignments are pretty intensive but reading isn't essential to your grade.
Dr. Burgess is a good teacher but moves very fast and can be hard to understand if you aren't already familiar with what she's talking about. She is not disorganized but the way she organizes information can be a bit unclear. Her favorite thing is to break students into groups and have them read a section per person of a document and then share what they learned with the rest of the class. There are other group projects and groupwork done throughout the semester as well
