Not only did he find a book that was easy to follow to add to comprehension, but also he is easily approachable. He makes no student feel stupid, but he doesn't just hand out 4 points. The class is definitely not easy but it is comprehendible with his, and the books, help. However, this is only his first year at Eastern and he hasn't been exhausted by its math department yet. Also, a note, doesn't he kind of look like John Arbuckle (from Garfield) as a Monty?

The finest math instructor

I have spent the last four years in math courses. Mr Goering taught the first one, calc 1, and I don't think I appreciated what an excellent teacher he was until after I took other courses from other instructors.

I have had many courses taught by Ph.D.'s. None of them were as helpful as Goering was.

When I was taking Calc 3, the regular Ph.D. instructor was unavailable, and Goering subbed. At the end of the class, nobody got up to leave, because he was still available to explain things to us. Even after he dismissed us, nearly the entire class gathered around him near the chalkboard while he was explaining the Epsilon Delta proof again (in yet another way). No, not an exaggeration, I think maybe one person left. Some of us were late to our next class, because we knew that we would not have this opportunity again, and the next day we would be back to our Ph.D. instructor, who had great difficulty explaining things to us.

Bottom line: if you want a good grade take her class, but if you actually want to learn the material

She is a nice person. However, she is entirely too easy which in any other case is not a problem except that this class is suppose to prepare you for the next class in the series which is organic chem. The problem is that she lets her students use notes on all the tests which does not help us to really learn the material well. When students get to the next level, they will get a slap in the face because the other teachers will expect you have the info memorized by now.

She also is not very good at actually teaching the material. She never lectures, all we do in class is highlight in the chapter what we need to know for the test and if anyone has a homework question, she will go over that specific question. I might as well just stay home and read the book.

I have also had her for Engl201 and enjoyed that class as well. Polly takes the time to assess where the class is in the course, discusses our daily readings in class, and always finds interesting ways to prompt us in our discussions and conclusions. It is a very laid back class atmosphere in which I think most students are very comfortable. Polly has a great personality, and really wants to help her students excell as much as possible.

Great teacher

Haney is yet ANOTHER of the excellent professors the Computer Science Department has to offer. He is funny, he knows what matters, and he'll teach you the material. He is NOT high-stress, he definitely values his students, and since he is a graduate student, he understands a student's life!

Take Haney for any classes he offers, you won't be disappointed.

Thumbs up for McRae

Dr. McRae is a great teacher. He teaches the material, and most people understand it. Without a doubt, he is one of the best chem. teachers in the department.

Homework: The homework in this course was difficult. Dr. McRae wanted to make sure you undersood the material and didn't let up for anyone.

Tests: Nothing new, just a regular test. However, I also found out that Dr. McRae loves his algebra. Therefore, if there is a way to twist an equation that not many students will think of, he'll find it. Studying for these 'beasts' is a must. The best way to study is by doing the suggested problems he puts in the syllabus. So don't lose the syllabus, because if you don't use the problems for the test, you most likely will use them for the final.

Final: This was not quite as hard as the individual tests. If he asked it on a test, then it is fair game for the final. There are really no worries, because his main objective is to give you the basics so you are prepared for the next course. Study the basics and you'll be fine. Don't worry about the little stuff.

So, Dr. McRae is a toughy but not as tough as people make him out to be. He is always willing to help students and make sure they are on the same page. The first week might be intimidating, but his class is really fun and enjoyable. I did wish, however, that he did more in class demonstrations. The lectures are right out of the book so if you miss a day just read the book. All in all, Dr. McRae was one of the better teachers I had this year.

Not the best

Dr.Bolte is an interesting teacher. She can be a great person outside the classroom, but inside the class is a whole other story. The problem seems to be her communication skills. They need vast improvements. The lectures are dull, and I think she knows that, otherwise she wouldn't use colored chalk to liven the crowd. Plus, she teaches straight out of the book, even using the same examples. This shows a complete lack of creativity, or effort (you be the judge).

The homework problems teach you the basics, but they have no relevance to what is on the tests. Also, hope she has no grader, because the grader was worse than her.

Tests were extremely difficult, and often didn't directly assess the material covered. Instead, the tests challenged your ability to apply the equations in series to reach a desired answer. The problem was that she didn't teach you how to use the equations in different series.

So, if you want a teacher with a decent personality, but a natural bent to grade tough and teach little, then Bolte is the one for you. The only saving grace is possibly your final which is worth a majority of your grade. It makes the difference between passing and failing for most people.

His teaching methods are so easy to follow and understand that they can be picked up by the slowest of learners, but at the same time don't seem too slow or watered down for those who have previous knowledge. He is constantly joking around and makes it fun to be in class. His homework is very reasonable, although he does seem to get ambitious with his final projects. He understands when people struggle and adjusts due dates when needed. I would reccomend him for any class he teaches. And if you ever need to find him you just have to listen for his voice, because if he's anywhere in the CS building you will hear him.

Doughty does NOT rock

Doughty's class is a waste of time. He really enjoys the subject, but he cannot explain it well enough that entry level students can understand. On top of that, the "lab" that goes with the class always takes longer than it should, and you won't have a clue what you are doing. You'll probably fail the lab midterm, and definitely fail the lab final. Not that it matters, because he slaps a nice little curve on at the end, so at least some of his students pass.

So, if you want a boring class, you don't want to learn anything, and you want to leave class every day asking why you came, take his class.

She is ok

Jackie is a decent professor. She is easily confused, and generally answers incorrectly. Many times she gets confused when working her own problems on the board. You will find her lectures useless as she drones on and on. When you get done with lecture and start doing homework, you'll realize she taught you nothing of consequence and you must teach yourself. All in all, one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Avoid at all costs.

Did I mention how many times she noted she was a "full professor" and that the class evals we did didn't matter? It's a good thing she's tenured so we can't have a good professor!

On a final note, she had said in class any extra credit we worked over 100% of the homework points would apply to our test grade. During the last week of class, she decided to change her mind (without telling the class). The only reason a few of us found out is because we asked. Regardless, much of the extra credit work we did was for nothing, and we wouldn't have put forth so much extra effort if she hadn't told us she'd count it towards test grades. Many of us feel as if we have been cheated out of some very precious test points.

I'd avoid Bolte if possible, but the reality is that there aren't many good professors there. Do what many students do, take it at Spokane Falls Community College.

Not many worse

While she is very informative, she'll bore you to death, and you'll be unprepared for her tests. In general, too many points taken off for answers that are nearly correct. You think you know what she's talking about, until you begin on the homework. At that point, you'll have to start teaching yourself the material.

Definitely a horrible teacher... over half the class has failed/dropped. Good thing she is tenured (as she repeatedly tells us).
