Actually he was the professor of my first college class (Afro American Studies) at San Jose State University in the fall of 1982. Not only did he open up the world of African and African American studies to me, but he took it a step further. He talked to us about life outside the classroom. Yes, he had an accent when I took his class (which I took several of his classes between 1982 and 1985), but I did not find him difficult to understand. It really isn't hard to understand him if you listen and not judge. Some people hear an accent (or speech impediment and tune out the person speaking). Because Dr. Masare took the time to not only teach class material, but about life in general, I can honestly say I may not have completed college and have the exceptionally strong appreciation for my African American heritage.

I am now in my 40s and I still remember Dr. Masare as clearly as I did 25 years ago and will always cherish what he taught me. There should be more teachers like him.

Proof That Great Teachers Exist in Community Colleges

I've attended a UC school as well as an Ivy League school, and I rate Arianna HIGHER than I do many of my professors that I had in these more prestigious institutions.

I had Arianna as a professor a few years ago, and based on the reviews here she seems unchanged.

Arianna is a demanding professor. She expects you to do well, come to class on time, and she holds high standards. There is no questions she plays favorites, but she plays favorites in the sense that if you're always late and obviously don't care about the material, she will make no bones about putting you on the spot and picking you to answer the tough questions. (In fact, I was late my first day due to a last-minute class change and was subjected to an annoyed stare from Arianna for disrupting the class, but as time passed and she saw how eager I was to speak in class discussions and how dedicated I was to turning in good work, I quickly became one of her favorite students.)

There is no question that Arianna is very opinionated and has a strong personality. Sure, it may not have been "proper" for her as a professor to throw an snappy comeback at a guy who made homophobic remarks in class, but was it a genuine reaction and the right thing to do? Yes. If you're in her class to learn, her personality won't be an issue and will in fact be a major asset; if you're obviously not putting in the work and treating the class or the opinions of your classmates as a joke, chances are she'll rub you the wrong way eventually.

One might argue that Arianna crosses the student teacher boundary a bit, but honestly, I prefer that in a professor. Plus I like it when professors take your learning personally and want to get to know you; that motivates me to work harder and it keeps me on track. With a lot of classes, one starts to get the feeling that if the professor doesn't care, why should you?

I highly recommend Arianna as a professor for anyone who is truly motivated to learn, doesn't mind having their beliefs challenged, and enjoys being made to think. If you want to take a class where you can coast through doing not much of anything and you get to sit in the back sleeping all day, please choose another professor and save Arianna and yourself the headache.

I learned not only the art of public speaking but also...

People say Fermin is hard, but actually, it is not if you read the book and be ready during lecture. I took his class, Speech 100 during the Spring Semester of 2007 and I did learn a lot.
He will teach you how to do your outline well and he won't mind if you dont have visual aids nor having to dress really well unlike many speech professors who take a lot of time to tell their students to dress up during class speeches.
His exams are pretty much objective and you will do well if you read the book and come to his class. He also do midterm reviews with the class.
All in all, his class was great - no dull moments.

she's extremely boring, there is no structure, a test is given after each chapter, multiple choice and only 10 questions. the paper you think is going to be easy is highly criticized by yours truly, she does let you re-write it, but you'd be damned if you can even boost the grade up another letter. i keep in contact with many from the class and only two of the -about 9 people i know passed the class. GOOD LUCK!

oh yeah, she doesn't have an office on campus so speaking with her out of class is impossible, she also never checks her email!

Great Man Great Teacher

The course unfolds through a series of small group projects that are deceptively simple but difficult to explain. Once you finish with a project you must explain it to Mr. Landes and meet his standard of explanation. Everyone goes through this process and eventually explains a solution in front of the class. i loved talking with him after class. the course is based around group work, No homework no exams only discussion and teamwork. There's enough lab homework is incredibly hard. She doesn't grade consistently through out students. Meaning, she plays favorites. The exams are nothing about concepts but is based on applications. Class average for exams is usually 65%. She is caring and extends additional help to students who may need it by doing one on ones. She encourages students to voice their thoughts. If you do not say the right answer, she will not make you feel stupid. Her responses are encouraging. She is big on group work, so prepare yourself to work with others. Her whole thing about group work is that it improves your communications skills, a skill essential to success. There are only a few simple quizzes which are based on the readings. Her homeworks are also easy to complete because she explains the homework subject and has the class do in-class exercises. She allows students to rewrite essays that they have not received passing grades. There were four required essays- three self written and one group. She gives extensive information on all of the essays; therefore, students are well prepared to write the essays. The last day of class was celebrated by a little party. He really knew what he was talking about, and intertwined his lectures with his own personal life experinces. His class is not easy, and i would recomend to not take him if you want to sit there and skate by undetected. I actually enjoy having to work hard for a good grade. He teaches with such passion that its hard to believe anyone would not want to saturate everything he says. He is not the sterotypical old stuffy history teacher. He relates history to the present day, and dose so in a way that i was able to not only retain most of it; but put it to use in conversations and other classes.

GOOD AND BADS.......

He's a really nice teacher, his lectures are good (he has a kind of heavy accent so pay close attention), and homework and papers are pretty easy.
