Honest. I remember, scribbling nonsense patterns on my Jeans. And then the assignments & Homeworks came along, and they exhumed me totally for the entire sem. How many long hours spent in PD Block, trying to work out atleast one of the 20 problems he handed over each week. It was a tour-de-force.

By the end of the course, I didn't learn much of Abstract Linear Algebra, but what I relished was how much raw energy he brought out in his teaching, in his work. And as we became a little bit friendly (there were lunches in C Mess, and innumerable cups of tea in Tea Board), my likeness turned into admiration. His attitude of "nothing else matters except how good u do ur job" rubbed in. And, my love for abstract maths got rejuvenated, after a long long time.

My soul having been long ago sold to the Devil called Software Industry, and my greed overshadowing my other desires,I didn't pursue Abstract Maths any more...but Dr. Patil's course often put me in a pensive mood about my academic pursuits.

I had a nickname for him - I & my fellow friends called him "Kisan"...the prof. who teaches as if he were ploughing a field...with no prudish hangovers, but raw like a farmer...and as energetic. And yes one more thing, he talks like a Gangster..especially while having Tea after 10 PM in the Tea Board.

Thank you Dr. Patil, for four months of greulling coursework, and occasional transportations to the beautiful & the aesthetic.

Mostly Misunderstood

His ability to present information in the most condensed manner has impressed me the most. He can explain the most difficult of problems in such simple terms that all books are put to shame. He lectures were stimulating and he was quite open to conversations. He does seem difficult to approach but if one takes an effort to make a conversation with him, it is quite difficult to leave the place before 2 hrs.

A good human being

He is a very good prof. & a very good human being as well. His teaching is not of good standard. His grading is very harsh and he failed over 10 guys in our class. Bcause of this he was called to senate meetings to discuss the issue. In another batch he gave some guys "F" grades and two of them were expelled from IISc even after they pleaded with him. He is a merciless vindictive narrow minded bigot to say the least- and I'm being very kind with my words here.
Such profs should be left to do research and not asked to teach courses where they are in charge of grading.

A difficult-to-understand teacher.

I attended Patil's course because it was a core course and had to be completed. Given a choice I would not have done the course. Patil is a great mathematician, but fails as a teacher. The lectures are very poorly organized and his work on the blackboard leaves a lot to be desired. Like Sonal says, the classes are 100% gruelling and it takes all your effort to concentrate. His classes are not for everyone. Personally, I disliked his classes because he made them too complex and difficult to understand.
A basic level compulsory course like linear algebra should have been made better organized and simpler. Patil's teaching is more suited for advanced courses. Simplify, simplify, simplify. Dr. Patil, please try to understand that.

A mathematician and a teacher

Got to do his course in the first sem at IISc. i started liking maths again.
His classes were INFORMATIVE and gruelling. He gave his 100% to the class - naturally his expectations were just as HIGH.(in fact even his TAs were almost as good.) The influence of the German school, the restrained rigour and the beauty of maths came forth clearly in his lectures.

Excellent teacher I have ever worked with. Explains the theory in a way that is understood. Popular for his puns and metaphors. Ability to explain subtler nuances which usually are important in numerical methods was slightly hindered by the fact that the class was heterogeneous in its understanding capabilities.

Overall it was a nice experience taking the course and probably a safer bet than trying to satisfy the Math requirement for research by going to the Maths Dept!
