He says he lost some friends in a "car accident" which must have been really sad. Kinda weird because he thought it was rather silly? Whatever.

More importantly the way he approaches the subject matter is really interesting because he takes some real world incidents and relates them to the course work at hand. This helps mostly because we all know that technology is dynamic and is apt to change at any given moment.

He says that we should be all rich after we get out of his class. That remains to be seen.

RECOMMENDED TEACHER!!!

I had this class at a 4:30-7:00 p.m. slot and was dead worried that I was going to be bored out of my mind. Fortunately I took the course with Professor Sheehey! He makes his lectures interesting and funny. He really loves working with children, and enjoys teaching SPED.

There are five (six page) research papers, but they are pretty simple once you start working on them. Other than that, there are only two short papers. You also need to organize the research papers into a resource portfolio due at the end of the semester.

Professor Sheehey is lotsa lotsa fun! He brings little candies into class to help keep you awake. Take this class with him. If I have another opportunity to have him as a teacher... I will jump to it!!!

Lotsa paper!

I learned a lot in this class... I also did a lot in this class! Papers, reflections, an individual teaching project, and a team teaching project...

The final is a little nuts, about 90 questions... but as long as you went to class and completed the readings and assignments, you should do fine. I got a "B" without studying.

If you are afraid of public speaking, don't take this class. Not only do you have to teach a module (from the textbook) to the class, but you also have to videotape yourself teaching some students.

Overall, Professor Ratliffe was a good teacher. She is a fair grader and does her best to help students pass.

Interesting discussions

Professor Gay is just a nice person. You can tell through her lectures that she really enjoys teaching this subject.

The assignments consist of short essays, readings, and an oral presentation. Overall, the easiest class I had this semester. She is also quite lenient when it comes to late papers.

Be prepared to speak up during class discussions. She enjoys talking over the various concepts that are brought up throughout the readings.

She is a strict teacher, expects you to be on time, come to class, and be prepared. Keep your feet off the chairs, and face towards the speaker at all times and you'll do fine.

Class projects are easy, homework is easy, no tests and NO FINAL!

She keeps track of absences and you'll lose 5 points for every day you miss... THIS IS A BIG DEAL! THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

I'm not dense, mind you. In my previous university, I took at least five seperate math courses because I found it interesting. His accent is thick, but I had no problem with it. Unfortunately, this professor will bring up all kinds of abstract information, and like another rater said, even material that will not be on your tests.

You are also forced to buy his book. He writes it. There is no other book. That in itself is a red flag. I became so incredibly desperate in this course, I hired a tutor with an MS in mathematics. They couldn't understand the material! I found another one, and they had the same problem! I went to the T/A for assistance, and instead, all I was met with was a 20 minute long discussion about the 5th dimension, which apparently had little if anything to do with the homework which I could not do.

Among my experiences which I wish I could go back in time to change and make right, taking this course with this professor ranks among the top five of that list. A-V-O-I-D!

The Human Blob

Weinstein has no distinguishing characteristics, neither as a scholar nor as a man. He is basically just some guy off the street. He is not even a real professor. He is not dumb, but he is not smart either. He has not published ANYTHING in decades. Weinstein is further proof that the UH Manoa sociology department should adapt a new hiring policy: find someone with a PhD from Harvard, lobotomize and castrate them and then give them a million dollars and a one-way plane ticket to wherever they want to go. At least this policy would free up some precious office space in the department that is now taken up by the likes of the pathetically useless Weinstein. Unfortunately, Weinstein is typical of this department, which resembles an Old Boy Network of academic non-entities, failures who promote people just like themselves. They tend to be old, white and male, but they have no qualms about promoting others who are not old and white and male as long as they are mediocre. (Actually, mediocre' who be a generous term for these professors.) So a long time ago Weinstein got very lucky, and he makes a lot of money doing nothing but posturing. Well, if you want to waste your own money, sign up for a class with Weinstein.
What I remember most about taking the course with Weinstein was feeling this persistent sense of embarrassment when he talks. He always takes on this sense of bravado, a posture of intellectual daring, when what he actually does boils down to pretty stale pudding. He speaks of the sociological profession using the royal 'We', but in fact he is no sociologist -- not even a bad sociologist. He could be replaced by a good graduate student. But, no, that would expose the department to the naked truth that 90 percent of the professors are duds. But just looking at Weinstein, a man who is seemingly featureless, is something that takes getting used to when one is expecting a serious education.

Aoude is an incompetant biased fraud

Ibrahim Aoude is not even a real professor. He is a fraud, dumber than paint. Whoever his dissertation chair was should be ashamed, because Aoude is simply not qualified. In fact, he seems to know nothing about anything. And whoever was corrupt enough to hire him at UH (undoubtably one of his buddies) should realize that whatever department he is a part of takes on his stink of ignorance and mental inferiority. Think of the dumbest, most ignorant person you have ever met Aoude is even worse. He does manage to strut around and pretend to be an authority on whatever the topic at hand is, but it is embarrassing.
My own experience with him was very negative, of course. We did not discuss anything at all in class. My term paper was on the ethnic minority cultural influences on economic forms, and Aoude was immediately against the topic, even though he knew nothing about it. His reaction was so mechanical and automatic that I should have known right from the start that he is a loser. It was a very well-researched paper, and it was balanced in its conclusion, but he returned it with a C grade and gave me a C for the course. The paper had no comments on it. This was a good paper that would have gotten at least a B at an Ivy League school, and probably an A in a UH graduate course. It was a total rip-off of a course, and his attitudes are so ignorant and biased it is pathetic.
Not only would I suggest that Aoude be avoided as a professor, but the Ethnic Studies department he is a part of should be dismantled as corrupt and mediocre. They have a bunch of idiotic jackasses in that department who are milking the system and not doing any serious work. They should be replaced. For shame.

The previous review of her performance rings true from my own experience. She is a bright person, but pretentious and insecure. She does have this pompous and mumbling tone of voice, and a strangely condescending manner. She is intellectually scattered, but worse, emotionally flimsy and hysterical, a basket case. Dealing with her, she is like a box of chocolates in that you never know what you are going to get. Her life is almost a parody of the lonely, hostile, insecure academic, and seems to revolve around her stinky, stupid dog. Those who can, do; those who cannot, teach; and those who cannot teach, teach teachers. Professor Lum has terrible handwriting, it is very difficult to read. She always has to read it to us because we can't read it. We always have to ask her, "What does that say?" She has never made any effort to improve her handwriting. Her speaking skills are just as bad. She does not project her voice and when asked to speak louder, she gets upset and says, "Well move up!" How is it possible to move up when the entire class is filled?! The number of people in the class is small, about 27, and 98% of us have difficulties with this teacher. She takes a month to return our papers and exams. When there is an exam coming up, we ask her what the format is. She tell us she doesn't know. Later on, we ask her again and she tell us it will be multiple choice but when we get the exam it is completely essay. She does not explain the material well so a majority of us get low grades on exams. When we ask her to explain something to us in further detail or to re-expain something in a manner that we understand, she gets upset and asks us why we didn't read the assigned material. We do read (suprisingly!) but we don't understand it. She refuses to give clarifications. A majority of homework that she gives us is not even graded. We needed to do some papers and presentations that were worthless to our grades. Many other professors dislike her also, but because of an "heirarchy," they are not able to do anything about this teacher. One day when we were supposed to have an exam, we waited outside of our classroom for her for 1/2 an hour. UH Policy is that if the professor doesn't show up after 15 minutes of the starting time, the class can leave. After those 30 minutes that we waited for her, we all decided to leave because we figured she wasn't coming to class. We even called her office and only got her voicemail. The following week, we were yelled at for not going to look for her all over campus. She was xeroxing our exam and she said we should have looked for her (even though we had no idea where she was!)and accused us of just trying to skip out on the exam.
I could go on forever about this teacher, but I don't have time because I need to write another worthless paper for her class. If you ever have the chance to pick between her and another professor for this class, I URGE you to pick the other professor!
