I suppose this review may be somewhat pointless, for sadly, she is retiring after summer 2008...but suffice to say a kinder, sweeter, more patient and approachable professor never walked the halls of Harper College. A truly caring and highly intelligent woman, she creates a genuinely unique learning experience by bringing light, blessed light, to previously dark and unexplored places. Melodramatic? Maybe. But get this: by paying attention to the good doctor, by lending a needy ear, by keeping good notes, by speaking up in class, by at least attempting to understand others by walking a mile in their shoes, by taking great care to complete assignments--especially papers--on time, by shutting off your cell phone, by keeping quiet unless spoken to, by describing in your journal entries the wretched torments of our frigid personal damnations and the incredible heights to which hot, passionate, bursting gunpowder love brings us, by raising your hand instead of talking out of turn, by remaining quiet during films, by referring to her as Dr. Restovich instead of Rusty, by refraining from eating in class, and by offering the simple respect owed humanity....you may please her ;) Do these things, and she will like you. She will make her respect and fondness no secret. In the mornings she will say hello and be happy to see your smiling face. Do them not, and you'll wash out in a week. The teacher, Bob Paul did an outstanding job in making the class informative, interesting and very fun. He always made sure the students understood the material or the assignments before moving on to the next topic. His schedule was well planned for the entire semester and it showed. He put alot of effort into this "pilot" class to make it successful. One of my favorite parts of the class was when the students gathered in small groups and discussed the material. I also enjoyed watching some of the Deaf comedians on video tape. Finally, I liked the fact that we had the opportunity to sign our own stories, poems, etc. If you love literature, ASL, and learning more about Deaf people this is the class for you. You have to do a lot practice and studying to pass this class. He is a very helpful teacher and will answer all your questions. i have heard he gives the longest quizzes than most accounting teachers. The quizzes are 20-25 questions, T and F with some problems once in a while. I think all the ACC teachers give the same exams. Your best bet to past this class is to get help when you don't understand something. She hands out lecture notes for each chapter, that you can add notes to. I feel that sometimes she doesn't review over everything that would be important for the test. There are some questions you get to on the test and you wonder did she talk about this. She does let you question her test, which question you didn't think was fair or wasn't very clear. She even lets you use a note card on the test. He is very knowledgable, but I sometimes feel he draws so many graphs I get lost what he is trying to say. Each class she would inform us what we would be doing for that night and in the upcoming weeks. She was always prepared and never came late to class. Sometimes, she would lecture on the material, and other times she would show ASL video tapes, and demonstrate the different ways to use voicing techniques. She verbally offered concrete advice for the voicing tests and homework. In this class, I learned how important it is for an interpreter to voice a message in the correct register matching the clients intent.(Formal situations vs. informal) I learned many new vocabulary words, idioms, and proverbs. Each class ended with a practice session, in which she was always available to help me and other students with unfamiliar signs and word choices. I learned so much! I feel Gail is an excellent teacher and is always encouraging students to succeed. In her class, I truly felt this way. He has open note quizzes and he is direct on whats on his tests. He tells you everything that will be on the test and there are no surprises on his test. He has an outline he puts on the overhead so you can have the basic notes, but you still need to listen to what he says so you can write more details(that helps on his tests). You do have to write a lot of notes. I used a whole notebook, for once and I can write a book with all the notes I have. You do have to write some papers and there is some homework. He explains history so well that you understand it and remember it. Also you want to learn more. Her grammar quizes are tricky. She doesn't grade easy on papers, but she does give you a second chance to fix your paper and try to get a better grade. What helps in her class is she makes you switch papers with someone else in the class and they read you paper and comment on it. The chapters you have to read are really long(30 pages ^ and 2 chapters a week).You have to put a lot of hours into this class.
