Though Dr. Lowe is extremely conservative and can be vocal about it, he doesn't foist his beliefs on you as some of the faculty in other departments do. Dr. Lowe expects more from his students than any of the other professors in the department. His witty and sarcastic remarks in reference to students' work is the stuff of legend. Dr. Lowe's best trait is his knowledge of lesser known areas of history (i.e. his civil war or sports in america classes) and hsi ability to bring these subjects to life. His lectures are structured and easy to follow and he always makes clear exactly what is expected of his students. He's not above joking around, but he does command a respectful distance between himself and his students. He's willing to offer help in anyway he can (he helped me sort out a thesis topic) and encourages participation in his upper division classes. Anyone with the opportunity to do so should take at least one upper division course with Dr. Lowe.

Sincere, intelligent, inspired

DVH IS the Political Science department at ONU, and one of the few compelling reasons to attend this tiny, somewhat eclectic conservative Nazarene University. I attended three semesters of classes at Olivet, during which I attended 300 and 400 level political science courses taught almost exclusively by Dr. VanHeemst. Dr. VanHeemst made a special place at Olivet for the small number of political science students at ONU; interested in something larger than themselves and making a difference, maybe through public service or some related field. Dr. VanHeemst served as a mentor, counselor, and friend to this small, gifted group of students who benefited from his knowledge and passion. I think it unlikely you could find anyone who would have a bad word to say about this young, energetic, and sincere academian. If you’re looking for an “education with a Christian purpose” Olivet definitely fits the bill. But if you’re looking for someone who shares your passion for working for Peace and Justice in a confusing world and can help point you in the right direction, DVH is one of the good guys who might be able to get you started on your journey.
