Be aware of the work load!

Dr. Ferrill is a fine professor, but her dislikes from other students is the work load. It is a 200 level course, yet it is graded like a 400 level. True she is trying to show you what the real world is like, but when the majority of students are sophamores and/or juniors, they are not prepared. In the two prerequsites (comp 1 + 2) many students are taught to write in a relaxed grading atmosphere. Their writing ability is based on essays, book reports or creative writing, where their mistakes are fixed by the prof. They never learn proper grammer techniques early on. (this is based on conversations from other students) If you do not learn how to write then you will certainly not fair well on her written assignments. Jean's three mistakes rule is seen as a little too tough for an INTRODUCTORY course. My personal opinion is that her effort deserves an A, yet her work load needs to lighten up a touch. I feel that the course should not be avoided if taught by her, but be aware of the work involved. I would recommend taking this class after having a technical writing course or during a lighter class load. Remember this is only an opinion. Sure many students will say that she grades too hard, but find out for yourself. (If you are a Geography major you will have to take this course.)
