An inspiring mentor

Dr. Iset Anuakan is an example of an honest soul following her calling. I have had her for HIS344: African American History, from Reconstruction to the Present, and recommend her as a teacher any unprejudiced person can learn from. Dr. Anuakan's classes consisted of lectures, videos, overheads, audio recordings, visual aids, and other resources that maintain student interest, through the integration of technology. Her speaking style is comfortable, yet professional- and easy to comprehend. In addition to exhibiting a detailed knowledge of background material relevant to subjects taught in the course, Dr. Anuakan has helped me gain a sense of practical relevance to the study of the African American cultural perspective. At the end of the course, students submitted a 10page term paper, essentially focusing on a turning point in the History of African Americans- and a 1page prospectus to specify focus beforehand. This exercise at first seemed taxing, but grew into a labor-of-love, due to Dr. Anuakan’s keen intellectual guidance. Overall, she should be commended for her open-mindedness, and ability to nurture student interest, without stifling academic expression.
