Dr. Hovick is definitely one of the best profs at UNCC. He loves chemistry and he enjoys teaching. You will find him to be a refreshing change from the majority of profs who teach because the university makes them teach eventhough when they'd clearly much rather be holed up in their labs.
He is always prepared for class. He has obviously carefully planned his lesson for the day and has thoughtfully devised methods to assist his students in understanding difficult concepts. He's happy to answer questions in class. He won't make you feel stupid for asking (even if the questions is really stupid).
Despite having several hundred students a semester, he will mostly likely know your name, your strengths and your weaknesses. He is not just available in his office, he will stop by the reading room to chat with you and see how you are doing.
His tests are very fair. If you put in three hours a week to read the chapters and do the problem sets, you will get at least a B. Put in another hour or two to really nail down the material and you will get an A.
Take a class with Jim Hovick so you'll know what a real professor is like. I guarantee that he will become the standard against which you will measure all other profs - and find them wanting.

Dr. Hovic is a good teacher. His lecture is very useful. He is always will to help the people in the class that are tring. And even though he gets stuck with 500 to 600 students each semester he still can tell who's actually tring. If your looking for an easy A then don't take him, but he makes sure that you understand the material. This class takes a little work but is very doable, if you try a little. He is very approchable, with any questions you may have.
