Enjoyed his knowledge of subject matter and teaching style. I totally agree with the other student comments that Dr. White has a gentle, respectful style but will put loud mouths in their place. He makes it clear that he is the professor and the leader of the classroom. Tests were a bit difficult, but get used to if you are RELS major... Intro classes are much easier in this department than 3000 level courses.

I have had this particular instructor for not only this class but also for an advisor in Senior Seminar. He had some interesting points but the thing that sent me off was that as an advisor he had no interest in me or helping to better the paper he was advising. His tests and lecture had absolutley no correlation to each other and to take notes in order to better the streches he was making seemed to only worsen the experience.

There is nothing what so ever drastically wrong about this teacher. I have had him several times and have enjoyed his classes. his tests are a little long, and he does expect some degree of intelligence from his students. Is that so wrong?? He is very mild mannered, soft spoken, and makes a genuine effort to be considerate to his classes. I have seen him be short with students on one or two occasions, but only when they were giving some 30 minuite speech about some friend who has a grandmother who heard... He did us all a favor by shutting them up. Out of the class he is an even nicer man who will go out of his way to give you whatever you need to do well in his class.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OTHER WHO HAVE REVIEWED DR. WHITE BUT 3157 WAS THE SECOND UPPER LEVEL RELIGIOUS STUDIES CLASS I HAVE TAKEN HIM FOR. I AM A RELS MINOR AND I THINK DR. WHITE IS AN EXPERT IN THE FIELD AND OVERALL A VERY NICE PROFESSOR. HIS CLASS WAS DEMANDING AND ONLY THREE GRADES DEPENDED ON YOUR FINAL AVERAGE. DR. WHITE WAS VERY INTERESTING AND HAD THE KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED TO TEACH SUCH A COURSE. I AM VERY SORRY THAT OTHERS HAD BAD EXPERIENCES WITH HIM, BUT I THINK HE IS AN INSPIRATION TO THOSE OF US WHO ARE INTERESTED IN RELS. THANKS

This class was TERRIBLY HORRIBLY stressful. The lecture had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the exams, nor did the grueling reading assignments. NOTHING - I repeat - NOTHING had ANYTHING to do with the exams. Egad!! The tests were completely subjective and not graded fairly or consistently. This fellow was consistently 10 or 15 minutes late (including on test days and he didn't give extra time to make up for it!), and somewhat (to extremely) sarcastic to anyone who asked questions. He required a giant research paper and oral presentation although this course does not give credit for either (W or O goals.) AND! this is the killer: the attendance requirement: miss 3 classes & your final grade drops a letter - miss 8 classes and you FAIL no matter what, period. Well several of us made superhuman efforts and had perfect attendance. But a girl in the class missed WAY more than 8 (we did keep track) and she bought him a gift saying that she was going to try to bribe him (now that is HER shortcoming not his - granted) and she did pass. I do not believe that her bribe worked, I do believe that he applies his "rules" inconsistently and totally unfairly and this girl really should have failed and it pisses me off that even when I was sick as hell I came to every single class and it didn't even matter!!!!!!!! One day I will turn her in to the Dept Head and then I'll feel better, and she'll get her appropriate karma ~:) This very smart capable quirky (and very nice outside of class) man should stick to research in India and publishing.

I was a Religious Studies major until I took this class. I learned absolutely nothing, and actually came out of the class more confused than when I entered. He is horrible. His tests have nothing to do with the readings or the lectures, and he is VERY pompous. He makes fun of students who ask questions. He doesn't enjoy teaching, and it clearly shows. I was very disappointed.
