Mr. Chavaria is one of the best professors I have ever had; A real old school, down to earth type. If you grew up on the block or just want to know what that life is about. . . you will love his style. His subject material is always interesting & he knows his stuff. He doesn't BS, so don't try to BS him. His lecture material is good stuff & the reading is fascinating. His tests are all from the material he covers in class and his test are open book. but you need to do the reading or you will be lost at test time. He loves to have students ask questions & partcipate in class discussions. Super instructor, CCSF needs more like him. Oh, don't get caught texting, talking. or sleeping during his lecture or one of his film presentations. The results can be very funny if its not you !

Good sense of humor. Lectures in a way that interests you and gets you thinking. Knows the material well and encourages feedback\questions.
His handwriting is awful but will gladly say what he wrote if you ask.
His test questions (which are T\F & MC) are too tricky and logistical rather than the straight-forward, "test your knowledge" sort. However, he makes up for it by making it open notes and open book.
Overall, my test scores weren't good but my note-taking and effort were and so he gave me a good grade.

This teacher will tell you everything you need to know about gangs. He breaks it all down and he is a real fair grader. His tests are open note and open book!

This was one of the classes I enjoyed the most and one that I learned the most from. Mr. Chavaria has a lot of interesting information about the subject of Organized Crime and Gangs. Since this class had so much information he explains what he expects the students to know throughly and repeatly. If you are in class and don't slack off in your reading you will pass the class with an 'A' it is hard not to.

Dr. Chavaria is an instructor, the head of the Latin American studies department, and for many years was employed as a federal parole officer. Dr. Chavaria has been around the block in places that I'd be afraid to visit even once.
Dr. Chavaria expected us to excersise our minds and our voices. He teaches and lectures with passion, he taught us the way things are, not just as they are supposed to be. Dr. Chavaria will gladly take the time to argue his point, and is strong enough to concede to error, although in the whole semester he needed to make such a concession only once.
I learned and continue to benefit from Dr. Chavaria's class. I have a solid understanding of the criminal justice system. More importantly, I now know what "due process" means, and know what to do if anyone is getting screwed out of it.
Taking a course taught by Dr. Chavaria first showed me how much I didn't know, taught me what I need to know, and left me hungry for continued learning.
