If you were looking for an easy A, here he is; and no others will deserve this honor but Mr. Collins. However, to be honest, by what I meant easy, I meant you dont have to summit any work until the VERY end of the semester with 32 pages of paperwith his nominated formatin any kind of essays you want. As long as you have submitted these amount of pages, it will be a guaranteed A grade for your final. Even if you have submitted 25 pages only, you will be getting a B, as he has promised for years. You dont even have to go to his classes--he doesnt even care about your attendance at allbecause all he talks about are the gay-and-lesbian issues. Yes, he is a gay man, but this is NOT the reason that I would NOT recommend him. Instead, the reason is because you will be learning NOTHING, NOTHING AT ALL. What he talks about, first of all, has nothing to do with appreciating the beauty of English. I cannot see that his class is an English class, but rather a class that is all about Gay and Lesbian issues. And therefore, HE WILL BE MISLEADING YOUR ACRADEMIC CAREER IN AN EXTREME WAY. I guess you should ASK yourself prior to registering his classes: do you want an A, or do you want to learn something? I feel deeply regret of enrolling into his class because he WASTED MY TIME! Trust me, AVOID him, especially if you are in English major. If you are really looking for a instructor who is comparatively easier, try Ms. Easa and Mr. Ductworth. I have taken more than 8 English classes in CCSF and they are just the best I would have considered and recommended.

MR. Collins is the best teacher i have ever come across in my learning experience. His lectors automatically put your learning and cognitive thinking skill to work. His material deals with issues that are current in the world and one get to reflect on how these issues affect us or help us. He is such a great teacher, who is very understanding and is willing to work with you. He's always willing to help you out and is VERY FAIR! I highly recommend taking Collins. There is no one like him, and I just love the way this man teaches.

It's all said in the reviews below, so let's review.
Jack is one of the nicest humans you will ever meet.
His knowledge of literature, somehow easily becomes your knowledge of literature.
Jack is easily the best teacher at CCSF. He cares, and it shows.
O.K. 32 pages are required, BUT you get to write them about things you love or will love about literature. Jack is someone who will change your perception about literature to a magical place where it is all interesting and understandable!

I'd definitely recommend Mr. Collins. His teaching style is a bit unconventional in that he doesn't set hard deadlines. However, the advantage of turning in assignments early is that he'll give valuable feedback and then allow you to redo the paper for a better grade. As for the course load, there's lots of reading and writing but that's to be expected. His book list is interesting and consists of two collections of essays/short stories. The good news is that he doesn't assign topics for review, he lets the student read through the books and review what interests them most. This made the assignments relatively painless. I considered dropping this class in the beginning of the semester only because the pace started out slow and he seemed to be catering to ESL students. I'd recommend this class to anyone but especially to ESL students. He seemed very aware of what they needed and worked with the ESL students so that they'd succeed in ENGL1A.

Mr Collins is a wonderful teacher! I expected this class to be stressful but I was wrong! Mr Collins is open, understanding, and he had taught me to appreciate all types of writing formats. I learned how to write different kinds of essays (compare/contrast, cause/effect, etc.). Mr Collins allows students to re-write papers to improve your grade. I recommend Mr Collins... He's the greatest!

Jack Collins is an awesome teacher. He is so cool and down to earth, that you will love this man to death! His class is so much fun, the way Mr. Collins teaches, makes you so comfortable that you just want to pull up a comforter and just listen to him talk. Doing his projects is not hard at all. I know writing 32 pages is alot, but face it you have the whole semester! His classes are always full and people always want to add his class. So if you want an excellent teacher that is always willing to work with you, then Jack is the teacher for you. Him and Mr. Loren Bell are just outstanding primo instructors!!! So register for their classes. You won't regret it!!!

Some call Professor Collins "easy" -- I prefer to call him deep, sympathetic, perceptive, understanding. He takes a bona fide University level course, and ensures that his students keep up with the demands of the course. Even though I had some fairly major "health issues" half-way through the course, he took a personal interest in my success. That cannot be said of all instructors at City, and he deserves to be admired for it.

I have taken Jack for all my English classes: 96, 1A, and 1B. I actually delayed taking 1A b/c he went on sabbatical. He is the most coolest, understanding, & compassionate teacher I've ever had!!! Being that I had been out of school for 15 years, Jack made all three classes throughly enjoyable because you can see that he really enjoys teaching. He wants the student to take as much as he/she wants from the class .He understands that students have alot of stress and distractions HE GETS THE STRUGGLES about being a student nowadays. HE CARES ABOUT HIS STUDENTS!!!He is a very positive & supportive teacher. I will truly miss him since I've finished all my English reqs. Besides being a great teacher Jack's a cool human!! If you can take him you wont be sorry!!! nameste and thank you Jack!!

Hello, I'm thinking of taking his class the next semester but get confused a bit. I just saw "John R. Collins" in the schedule. Is he "Jack Collins" as the one who is described here? Please help me to classify who is the real one! Thanks a lot!

Jack is a really nice guy that will open you up to all different kinds of literature. Even if you don't really like it, he will show you how to appreciate it. His class has a lot of freedom, you just have to turn in 32 pages of writing. There are no tests or finals, and he doesnt give any deadlines. Take him for any English class and you'll be glad you did.

Mr. Collins takes a different approach to teaching English. He will teach some formatting guidelines for you to follow, but that is it. He will let you write whatever you want, as long as you hand in 32 pages of writing. It's really not that hard.

Jack Collins opened my mind to literature. This is somthing I thought was impossible because I had a horrible experince in an previous 1B class and I was forced to withdraw. (Read: DO NOT TAKE ENGLISH WITH RACHAEL WEBB). Jack's class was enjoyable. He makes the assignments enjoyable. He encourages everyone to talk about their views of the literature and does not judge them even if their views are quite different than his own. I would recommend that anyone take Jack Collins for any English class he teaches. I would especially recommend him if you HATE English because he just might change your mind.
The only complaint I have about Mr. Collins is that he was not available outside of class, he did not check his phone messages, and he did not read his e-mail. He is willing to see students after class though.

I used to think that English classes are the hardest ones (English is my second language) but I don't think so anymore. JACK COLLINS IS THE BEST ENGLISH TEACHER YOU CAN GET!!!!! There are no due dates in his class. Every single assignment is crystal clear because he explains you everything. He is very understandable and nice person. His assignments are often fun. There are 4 essays 1- Cause and effect 2- Process 3- Compare and contrast 4 -Free There is also 1 assignment that is equal to the essay and it is an easy definition assignment (took me 1.5 hours) We also had to write a few essay review ( in total of 15 pages). They are very easy to write and I really enjoyed it. The final is the best part of the class. It was the easiest assignment in the whole class. I don't want to say that Jack is an easy teacher, he is just so good that he makes it easy for you. I learned a lot in his class and I really enjoyed being there. If you can take his class on a Market st. do it there. The environment in the class is very nice. JACK COLLINS IS THE BEST ENGLISH TEACHER YOU CAN GET!!!!!

Brilliant, patient, and a cool teacher to have! If you have English req's to complete, you should take one of his classes. He was very flexible as far as composition assignments go, (as far as what subject I could do), and the readings were very enjoyable.
An asset to CCSF.
