Please, if you care about your grades at City College, avoid taking Ron Johnson at all costs. I can echo many of the other complaints voiced by the other reviewers.
He throws temper tantrums in front of class when people come in five minutes late. He constantly gets annoyed with trivial issues. He badmouths people's essays in front of class. He lectures that one of the objects of English 1A is to teach responsibility and that many of us students are not responsible. There are occasions when some people ask him questions, and he just says "I answered that on our last meeting, you must have missed that class", when in fact, he had never addressed that question.
His assignments are difficult to understand. Asking him for help didn't do much either. He gave me a 2 minute talk on general improvements to my paper and then told me he was done looking it over. He also assigns group projects, which may be difficult for you to organize with the other members of your group.
Also, as a minor note, if you are a student with conservative beliefs, you will not appreciate his bashing conservatives, and he also sometimes integrates his pacifist beliefs into his assignments making them difficult to answer if you have an opposing point of view.
To summarize, avoid taking his class, you will regret it.

Contrary to popular belief, Mr.Johnson is a good instructor. Yes, he has a temper and is not accepting of stupidity. But what do you expect, this is University Reading & Composition. He expects you to know the basics of writing a thesis based essay. He's a critical grader. Based on his lectures, the man has tons of life experience and a great sense of humor. He listens to everybody's comments and ideas no matter how uninformed and stupid they may be. If you want a worthwile class, give Mr.Johnson a chance. But don't expect it to be a cakewalk.

This one was a big mistake! His assignments are too cryptic to get a handle on, meeting with him during office hours provided no additional insight as to how to best approach them. The only relief one can expect from the tedium of his lectures are the frequent childish tantrums that he dramatically plays out in front of the class. His behavior in class is unprofessional and puzzling. I would hope that a teacher with his sensitivity issues to better establish the ground rules at the start of the semester. If he had a stronger command of the classroom, perhaps he wouldn't feel so compelled to spew his frustrations so regularly.
