Great teacher !! Very Understanding!!

I really enjoyed having him as a teacher. To me chemistry isn't the most exciting of subjects, and the way he sometimes goes off on tangents kept me listening. We didn't have to turn in any homework, but I suggest you do it (that was my problem). He works out the problems on the board and helps you understand the concepts. Without his explanations, I would have failed the class (because I hardly did the homework) If you attend the class and do at least some of the homework, his class should be an easy A.

Nice but not good at teaching material

He is a very nice person , but his lectures have nothing to do with his exams or the text book.

His lectures are about different scientist, who and when got the Nobel prize and through Calculus how you can get to a chemistry formula.Very boring .

doesn' solve chem problems that might come on the test.

He has a lot of knowledge and talks about stuff the students do not need at all.

Will prepare you for chem 101A

Dr.McInerny, is an excellent teacher, and has an excellent personality. Grade wise to get an A you must get 87% in the class, in addition he gives out five tests and drops one with the lowest score. Lecture wise, you don't have to come to class as long as you do your homework and understand an entire topic. Overall, he's an excellent teacher.

Very knowledgeable in his field

I took Dr. McInerny's Tue/Thu evening Chem 40 class. It is true that, for the most part, Dr. McInerny rambles on about this and that, mostly about things scientific, but also about stuff ranging from obscure movies to life in the Middle Ages. It's a style that you'll either love or hate. When he does lecture on topic, however, he's a very good lecturer.

Personally, I enjoyed his teaching style because, one, I study well on my own, and two, I took Chem 40 to fulfill GE requirements only. I'm not a Science major.

The semester got off to a bad start because there was some last minute uncertainty about whether he would teach the course, or if Dr. Raymond Fong would. The matter was resolved by Dr. McInerny doing the lecture part, and Dr. Fong doing the lab part, but not only did we lose a couple of classes while this was resolved, but it was also not the best solution. The teaching styles of the two instructors clashed, and I feel we got caught in the middle of politics between the two (evidenced more by Dr. Fong's behavior than by Dr. McInerny's).

Anyhow, Dr. McInerny was in control of the grading, and this is how it worked out. There is no homework to turn in, though he does recommend people do the problems at the end of each chapter. There are three lecture tests, all three of which make up 50% of your grade. Your lab work makes up 20% of your grade, and the final makes up the remaining 30%. There is no test specifically called a midterm. To get an A, you need at least 85% (though next semester that will go up to 87%), to get a B, you need at least 70%, and to get a C, you need at least 55%. This is a VERY lenient scale.

A word about the tests. They are Scantron multiple choice tests, but you still have to work out the problems to see which of the choices is the correct. Beware, just because your answer is listed among the choices does NOT mean it's the correct answer! Double-check your work! The multiple choices include the most frequently wrong answers, like when you multiply instead of dividing, so they can be tricky. The tests also included four or five questions that are not multiple choice, and although they were no harder than the other questions, they are worth four or five times as much as the multiple choice questions. Also, every test had one or two incorrectly graded questions because the key was wrong. But he admitted the errors, and corrected the grades without any fuss.

We didn't complete all the material scheduled on the syllabus, but we completed enough for an introductory course, or so assured us Dr. McInerny. Overall, he's an easy instructor to like, if you can accept his style. He never picks on anyone, nor makes anyone feel dumb, and despite chronic back pain, he's always in good humor.
