gave me an A and I failed three SFSU econ classes

I took three econ classes (with three different teachers) at SF State and had to withdraw from all of them because, like half the class, I was failing. This was the first econ class I took at CCSF and I got an A.

Your grade is based on the midterm, final, 1 paper, and attendance:

The midterm and final tests are VERY FAIR and VERY PASSABLE. Before each of those tests (which are short essays), he tells you everything that will be on them. The actual test consists of 10 essays, and you can choose any 5. Of those 5, the lowest scoring one is dropped and the remaining 4 is your score. With this in mind, you'll definitely pass the midterm and final if you studied and\or listened in class the outline he gives you.

For the paper (which you will work on the entire semester), you can choose any economics-related topic. Find something you're interested in, do the research, write an organized paper, and you'll get an A on it.

He also won't lower your grade if you miss some classes, just as long as you're showing effort.

If economics is boring to you (which probably applies to most people), he's not a miracle worker, and he's not going to make it very fun. However, he is good at explaining the concepts and can be funny at times. Also, he's friendly.

Good people...

Like the previous review states, he doesn't hold your hand. What he does do is lay out exactly what's expected of you, quite frequently. About every 10-15 minutes he asks, loudly, if there are any questions... then he asks again. If the blank stares overwhelm the nods then he explains it again; which is A LOT more than you'll get at any other State or UC. His tests are very well put together and actually test on the theories of the semester. He's not going to feed you every single idea about economics, he leaves a lot up to the student to theorise on their own, which again is in preparation for a University. If you're really preparing to transfer take his class, if not... well just take something else.

A great economics class

Mr. McKeever is a very good teacher and is highly accomplished in his field. He doesn't hold any one's hands and encourages critical thought. In many countries, education is evaluated by means of one test for the course. Certainly, three pieces of testing is fair. The project is an opportunity to thoroughly learn of something of interest to yourself and the exams are excellent in that they do not test one on rote memory skills, but rather conceptual understanding of the principles taught. That's why we are here, right? To really learn and not just get periodically quizzed on things we memorized. Every opportunity is afforded to actively engage in class (many people did not show up, came in late or disrespectfully put their heads on the desk) and enjoy the lectures. Economics is really interesting if you understand that it is interconnected with all other parts of life and I learned a lot. I also like that there is a socially conscious thread in his teaching so it seems relevant. You will do well in this class if you are self-motivated, study independently, read and read the book and notes and think about everything outside of class. If you want your hand held and an easy grade, then the class is not for you and maybe college isn't either.

He gives good lectures

Mr. Mckeever is good at his style of teaching, although it is not my favorite. His teaching evoloves almost entirely on his lectures. He presents the material well and is knowledgeable about what he teaches. I have refrained from commenting on key areas such as homework, because there just isn't any. I would prefer a teacher that assigns homework and gives quizzes (that you have to prepare for) because it is how I can learn and retain knowledge better; lectures have never been my favorite! This teacher would be great for students who love lectures and can motivate themselves to study even though it is not required (homework). Mr. Mckeever is not as bad as he was made out to be (previous review).

Fair teacher

The previous comment was far out unfair. Mr. McKeever is not a really bad teacher as stated. He just has a very different approach to teaching than the norm. His teaching method is very straight forward (no surprises) and is always trying to make sure his students understand the concepts at hand. Sure, there are only "3" assignments in the semester, but there is plenty of reading to be done also that correlates with the lectures which is expected of the students. And boring? Ok, so he is not the most entertaining teacher in the world but if you follow along with the reading/lectures and attend class, you would defintely find some interest in what he teaches. If you do everything that is expected of you in the class then the chances of passing are great, but most students can't seem to even put in the energy to come to class.

A terrible teacher

He does a poor job of preparing students for exams. There are no quizzes and no homework. Throughout the course we had only three assigments that were graded -- the midterm, a term paper, and the final exam. He does not encourage questions, and will not help students by helping them focus on key areas/subjects. The book? The book was hardly used. Oh, did I mention that he is boring? Well, he is terribly boring and will put you to sleep! What did I learn about economics? All I can say is that I'm sorry he replaced the professor that was originally going to teach (teach) the class. By the way, all of his students are gauranteed a passing grade!
