Choose another Instructor

Jessica Sobalboro is a tough teacher. In plus, she does not practice what she teaches. She thinks that everyone is out there to cheat on her exams. She talks about pointless things in lecture. In addition, if the world would end, or if you have an emergency, she does not care about you and she even tells you that in your face. The funny thing is that the class fell behind, and she blamed it on the class. Hello, quit talking about pointless things! Teach the class about the subject. Better choose another instructor for this course.

Energetic, Personable

Ms. Sabolboro is a very clear, animated lecturer, but she does focus a bit too much on prejudice and discrimination, her pet topic. It would be good to learn the other aspects of Sociology in more depth. I spent a lot of time outside class reading the book to prepare for the tests, when she hadn't gone over those topics much in class. She's often late to class.

She is very friendly and supportive of students, but can be a little unprofessional, getting too personal with students. She isn't really open to opinions other than her own, simply because she is so convinced that what she is teaching is the most advanced and correct view. Maybe you'll agree, but it would be nice if she at least listened to other angles.

Besides the reading, you'll also need to volunteer somewhere to do service learning, or else do a research paper. She is very unclear about requirements, such as how many pages she wants you to write, and will change them after you've done the work! Good luck getting your stuff back in the same semester! You also have to do class presentations with a group, so of course there will be differences in the amount of work each person will do, but you all get the same grade.

I did like how animated she lectures and how many entertaining examples she brings in. You only need to take a few notes in class to summarize the main points. She's probably better than some of the other Soc. teachers, and I must say I met a lot of students in that class because she's big on social interaction.

Great Teacher

Ms. Sobalbaro is the best teacher I have had at City. She explains everything very well and has many outside stories to complement the reading. She does get extremely mad if you are talking while she is lecturing. Some of the students that complain about being humiliated in class is because those students would just not shut up. Her tests are very fair because they follow the book and lectures. If you are serious about sociology you should take her class.

Very bad, drop if you can.

I waited to review this teacher because I felt that my review would be unfair. Despite that my review still reads like its reactionary. I should have reported J. S. to the department head. Her remarks to me were out of line. I have spoken to other students and we all had the same consensus: This teacher has extreme prejudice against some of her students. Her grading practices are completely unfair, and she humiliates students in front of the whole class. In her lectures her opinion is the only one of value. She does have favorite students, and on more than one occasion she used lecture time to address personal issues. In all fairness I should add that I and the other 4 students I talked with are in the minority. Most students enjoyed the class and found her to be an excellent professor.

Far too much elaboration. Repetitive lecturing.

First, let me say that as a person, I adore Ms. Sobalbaro. With that said, she is not a teacher one should take if you are planning on really learning all you need to know for a basis in Sociology. Her lectures generally focus on one very small (VERY VERY SMALL, miniscule even) aspect of the reading you are expected to do and as a result, the majority of concepts or topics are never even discussed peripherally in class. She is an extremely bubbly, enthusiastic person, which is fantastic, but the result of her constant over-elaboration is that one may feel unprepared come exam time, or even unprepared for the next chapter of reading. To wit: we spent the 3 days of lecture (an entire week of class) directly prior to the midterm discussing prejudice + discrimination, specifically how one can be prejudiced + non-discriminatory. It was my feeling, and the feeling of several other students I spoke with, that there was far too much elaboration, that we all would have benefitted from discussing the other 30 pages of the chapter, and that 30 min. would have sufficed for discussion of the topic. After that intial lecture day on the subject everyone in class caught on, but Ms. Sobalbaro just kept going. She would be an amazing teacher if she could just stay focused and on-topic, and move things along at a reasonable pace.

HIGHY RECOMMENDED!!! She truly cares about her students..

One of the best teachers in the Behaviorial Studies Dept. @ City College! She teaches from the book and also throws in real life stories for you to relate to within the lecture. Sobalbaro cares about her students and wants them to pass because she offers not one but TWO review classes outside of her own schedule!!! Her Reaction Papers are fairly easy they just involve some in depth critical thinking. The tests are FAIR and do correlate with the textbook and lectures. She teaches with a lot passion to the students. Sobalboro is always there for her students during her office hours if you have any concerns you may need to discuss with her. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

CCSF needs more strong women of color teachers like this one.

This class fulfills the Area D or E requirements for State, and transfers to UC. The readings in the textbook are kinda dry, but she is an interesting teacher who uses personal stories, and class discussion to get across the concepts. She is a good lecturer, I never fell asleep in her class. She offers extra credit for attending cultural or political events on campus or in the community.
