He is an awesome teacher, has the kind of integrity that can make all the students in the class respect him. He starts on time, is very organized, keeps his word, is supportive of students, and has really interesting lectures. He views the syllabus as a contract, so you know what is expected of you. He's also very clear about requirements for the papers, and the tests are based on the book--he'll tell you exactly which sections to study, which means you'll learn instead of getting stressed.
Dr. Sowerby has an eclectic background and teaches from his experience. I got a terrific overview as well as traditional and non-traditional views on all the main aspects of psychology. He balances the lectures with activities and discussions, and is open to questions and different opinions. It's rare for a teacher to be so knowledgable and structured, and still be very creative and nice to his students.
His classes are not "easy" as others have written--the test average was a C, as it should be. But he treats you as an adult, so the class is ideally structured for those students who really want to learn. Very available in office hours.

Dr. Sowerby is really an amazing teacher. The class is stimulating, especially if it is your first psych class. He practices Jungian psychology, which takes into account the field of parapsychology, which attempts to explain all those unexplained phenomenon such as ESP, synchronicity, clairvoyance etc. He is open minded and kind, however is a bit too easy, which I didn't mind at all =). One 2 page paper and NO other HM, 3 easy tests and thats it, plus attendence. Good in class exercises. Recommended strongly.

Dr Sowerby is not only a brilliant psychologist, he's also a great teacher. When I was in his class he gave no silly homework, only one written essay (which he has very high standards for, so it has to be really good since that's pretty much the only work he has you do on your own) and three major tests. he's very clear on what he expects you to know, and is a very fair grader. his priority is to see the students do well and will put a lot of thought into how the they can succeed in the class.
nice guy, very funny and entertaining. highly recommended!
