i might have enjoyed this class except for the lab. dan overcash is terrible. TERRIBLE. he is your lab instructor. HOPEFULLY by fall 2004 he will retire so you won't have to deal with him. the man is in his late seventies and uber senile. imagine spending your sunday nights trapped in an observatory with 15 of your closest friends and a man who can't read his own handwriting, work the equipment or remember what we're supposed to be learning.
lacey counts the homework 25% so find a study buddy and do well on that. astronomy is fascinating but the labs ruin it. second semester is where you get to talk about the fun stuff so maybe it's worth the suffering. but overcash will still be your lab instructor so aghagh nevermind. lacey curves a lot and is a nice young woman. your grade however will be a big surprise because she seems to have no grading scale. direct quote regarding final grades: "A 70 (average) might be an "A" or a 70 (average) might be a "D" i just don't know until the end!" she makes crucial typos in her own slides so keep a sharp eye. attendance is crucial so go it'll help your grade. use the CD. it helps on the homework and studying for tests. ask lots and lots of questions so you'll know specifically what will be on the test because we cover SO MUCH material.
in short: you will learn nothing from lab unless they ditch overcash, do VERY WELL on your homework, and go to class. ask her to put the notes on the web BEFORE class so you can print them out ahead of time. that'd make a big difference i think.
