The Magical Taskmistress

Win Cottle is an unusual tutor with a uniquely social approach, which was incredibly helpful for getting past English courses. English 120 was mine. As a result, I chose her to be my professor for English 150. From that course, I learned that Win subtlely teaches students to become independent with writing. As an professor, she demanded a lot of homework and assigned difficult essays. She was strict about them. At first, I felt deceived by a tutor, but as the course moved on, I gradually realized that she actually was not different as a professor as opposed to a tutor. She taught the class with her same social approach, which reduces stress. She was always willing to help when I asked her for some. She gives honest feedback on the essays with probably the most constructive of all criticism. If she knows that you work hard, she will up the borderline grades. Although it appears that her minimal lectures on writing do not make sense, nor does she drill on those writing techniques. In addition, she assigns students to do peer review of fellow students' work. Believe it or not, the package of peer review, deemphasized lectures, and strict guidelines comes together toward the end of the course. From my own experience, I realized that I was systematically learning and practicing the material assigned on the peer review, the "hidden material" in the lectures, and learning the proper use of it due to the boundaries of the strict guidelines. Therefore, I learned to know what I was doing as a writer. Students who drop the course appear to despise her, but the students who finish the course appear to adore her. What I saw on the last day was that there was no division of writers and nonwriters among students, even though some started the course better than others. I was among the ones who used to struggle with English. Thanks to Win's teaching method, I became an independently effective writer almost without knowing it. The final outcome of the class is what makes Win Cottle earn her right to assign so much work. Due to respect and thanks, she earned her title : "the Magical Taskmistress."
