Hidden Benefits

Although he is generally old fashioned (separating himself from the class rambling on with the slides), and as obvious -- boring, his class can actually be fun. He encourages study groups. His tests are multiple choice, so there is are no essay questions on the tests. He assigns students to work in groups on a simulated business. When he sees participation, he is more likely to up borderline grades and answer questions in his office in a calmer mood. In addition he gives add-on points to bring the highest score to 100 or even more. Beyond that he grades on a curve. His syllabus implies that he would down borderling grades if students don't participate, but I have not seen it because I actively participated and he upped MY borderline grade, a deciding factor to keep my honors status. He didn't even know about my honors status. Importantly, I didn't know that he would, so I never got comfortable with my grade status before the class was over. I had fun studying with my simulation group and students form other simulation groups. We, students, made the class fun ourselves. We grew with people skills which Norm views as an important part of business, which he lacks. So, we learn to be independent with studying and learning. But, he does teach study shortcuts. In sum, he provides an opportunity for students to independently make the class fun for themselves thanks to his simulation and fair grading system, or he is just plain boring if You just want to be dependent on a teacher.
